Mark didn t start out to be a furniture maker and refinisher. In fact, this is his third career.   I grew up a military brat, he explained, so it was no surprise when he chose West Point Academy for his college education. After serving his country, however, he decided a military life was not what he wanted for the rest of his life.
He became a graphic designer for a print company in Tacoma, Washington, where he lived for 20 years. But I didn t want to do it anymore so I began searching for something else,  Mark explained. It was a confluence of people and events that lead him to furniture making and refinishing.
First, he and his wife, a nurse, decided to move to Hawaii when their daughter reached school age. We wanted her to be where her four grandparents were, so she could grow up surrounded by family, Mark said. I had been interested virtual tours real estate in utah in furniture and woodworking and I did some refinishing for my cousin. Her family happens to own the building where Stand Up Eight is now located and they offered it to him.
Mark finds his furniture any way he can, as long as it s recycled. Sometimes he scores bulk pickup pieces, other times he buys furniture from hotels that are redecorating. Friends offer him pieces and he recently was given some classic vintage furnishings from the former Tennant Art Foundation.
I like classic pieces but whatever it is, if it s serviceable I d like to fix it up and sell it, Mark exclaimed with a gesture encompassing the shop. He is also willing to take pieces on consignment.
Stand Up Eight is meant to become a gallery space for various artists who use old things in new ways, whether it s furniture, sculpture, or art. An example: the briefcases Courtney Kaye hand paints that turn a boring old workaday necessity into a work of art.
His prices seemed quite low to us, but he said There s a right buyer out there for each thing, and he wants to make sure the right person can afford to buy the right piece. That s the kind of guy Mark Ariyoshi is.
And, hey, Stand Up Eight reflects his personality, his kindness and generosity. Jerry and I settled into a comfy sofa (which formerly lived in a hotel lobby) and could have spent hours just reading coffee table books (the Marimekko book captivated me) and chatting with this intelligent, interesting man.

The City of Buffalo Department of Public Works has shared their current plan and its justification for Linwood Avenue on Friday (see below) identifying the project goals and their design considerations. These goals include: • Resurface Linwood Avenue in 2012; • Comply with Complete Streets Ordinance; • Provide a much needed traffic calming solution for Linwood Avenue; • To address all concerns raised by the community and utilize this information to aid in selection of the best option moving forward. Cycle tracks can be either one-way or two-way, on one or both sides of a street, and are separated from vehicles and pedestrians by pavement markings or coloring, bollards, curbs/medians, parked cars or a combination of these elements. There are many advantages to this type of treatment which include increasing the comfort of bicyclists, improving clarity of expected behaviors of both bicycles and cars, has a low implementation cost and eliminates conflicts between bicycles and parking or parked cars from "dooring" cyclists. According to the National Association of City Traffic Officials (NACTO) Urban Bikeway Design Guidelines , the appropriate application for buffered bike lanes would be on streets with high speeds, high volumes, large volumes of truck traffic, on streets with extra lane width or extra lanes or where there are few conflicts such as driveways and intersections. Also, several studies have shown benefits in both safety and increased ridership associated with cycle tracks. An evaluation of cycle tracks in Montreal found, when compared with roads without this treatment, roadways with cycle tracks have a 28 percent lower injury rate and 2.5 times as many bicyclists. My excitement for cycle tracks is tempered by the fact that many residents along Linwood are upset about the lack of communication on the project. While I have personally received or have been copied on multiple messages in favor of this, a consistent point of contention folding travel cosmetic bag is their desire to have known about this project sooner. There are also other residents that have expressed a desire to see the street go two-way, which could also have some of the desired effects of slowing down traffic but this would not be as effective in improving the street for cyclists and could also increase the traffic volume. In this case, the Commissioner shall explore alternatives such as the use of revised travel lane configurations, paved shoulders, signage, traffic calming, education or enforcement to accommodate pedestrians, cyclists and persons with disabilities. If the Commissioner makes said determination, he shall reduce it to writing and file it with appropriate supporting documentation with the Common Council and Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board for its information and review. (4) Where the Commissioner determines that the inclusion of bicycle and/or pedestrian facilities on a roadway would constitute a threat to the health, safety and/or welfare to the motorists and/or pedestrians and bicyclists of the City of Buffalo. Like most of you, I m contemplating another vacation to Walt Disney World .  As I think about the usual planning topics (hotel, transportation, dining and so forth), I m also reflecting on past trips.  And frankly, I came away from our last trip, in December 2011, a little frustrated.  It s taken me a while to understand why, and that it s all my fault.
While I don t go as often as many, I ve been to Walt Disney World a good bit since my first trip in 1989.  So in my own form of arrogance, I consider myself something of an expert.  Hubris was my first mistake.   To explain what went wrong, I have to start with when I booked the trip.  I originally planned on us staying at the Wilderness Lodge , for sentimental reasons (I m fond of the National Park Lodges of the Northwest). After booking, however, low airline tickets Walt Disney World announced free dining (that is, the Disney Dining Plan, at no additional cost) and it would have cost us more to stay at the Wilderness Lodge with free dining so we transferred to the Animal Kingdom Lodge . This wasn t at all disappointing.  We have stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge and looked forward to returning to one of the most beautiful and unique resorts on property. Our stay, however, would be relatively short.  We arrived on Saturday and departed on Wednesday.  As it turns out, the combination low airline tickets of a short stay and free dining contributed to the frenetic trip.  That wasn t the only thing, however. I have stayed on property more often than not and historically had pretty good experiences with Disney low airline tickets transportation.  I ve had to wait for buses and even been tossed around on crowded buses leaving the Theme Parks at closing time.  But on the whole, I have been content low airline tickets with it.  In planning the trip, I obsessed over renting a car at the airport for our whole stay but decided we only needed a rental car for one day, just enough for us to drive to DISapalooza 2011 at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter .)
With that in mind, I elected to pick up a car from the Dolphin rental counters.  I should have taken the hint when I walked from Hollywood Studios (remember, there isn t direct transportation to the Dolphin from Animal Kingdom Lodge) faster than it would have taken for me to ride a Friendship Boat .
Even so, as I was walking to the Dolphin, I was online checking the price of a car for our entire stay.  Hindsight being perfect, I wish I had spent this relatively modest additional amount, but I am getting ahead of my story.
While I don t blink much at the cost of eating low airline tickets in restaurants, even I agree that most meals at Walt Disney World cost somewhere between ouch and I feel faint.   Originally, we planned to have a romantic dinner at Narcoossee s, Afternoon Tea at the Garden View Tea Room but do other meals more modestly.  Renting a car even let us make a Publix run.
When free dining became available, I went hog wild, adding dinner reservations at Chefs de France , Boma , and making sure we were where we wanted low airline tickets to be (typically Sunshine Seasons Food Court) to use our counter service credits. It never dawned on me to question whether it was realistic to get all of these meals and events done in only three and a half days, especially when we were relying almost entirely on Walt Disney World transportation .  I thought my commando low airline tickets touring days were over but, apparently, commando free dining runs just as strong.
So, with this kind of a schedule, is anyone shocked that on Tuesday (our third day) when we had Afternoon Tea scheduled for 2 pm, I had a meltdown when I had to wait 45 minutes for the bus from Animal Kingdom Lodge to Hollywood Studios.  (Yes, I foolishly planned on going to Hollywood Studios the same day we planned on being at the Grand Floridian by early afternoon.)
Now even though I m admitting I bungled it this time, don t take me as saying I let this ruin our trip to Walt Disney World.  A lot of things went right.  We immensely enjoyed DISapalooza 2011, the podcast taping and having diner with friends. And, of course, I took more photographs than necessary, especially of this giraffe having dinner in the savannah of Animal Kingdom Lodge.
low airline tickets In the euphoria of getting free dining, I forgot what makes a trip to Walt Disney World meaningful to us: spending quality time together having fun.  Had I done that, perhaps I would have had time to visit Animal Kingdom , seen the Osborne Family Lights and The Magic, The Memories and You , instead of spending a morning at Hollywood Studios fuming about Disney transportation.
For a long while, I blamed Walt Disney World Transportation; I even blamed free dining. low airline tickets It is too simplistic to blame Disney.  Having a rental car might have gotten me to Hollywood Studios sooner, but driving low airline tickets has it own hassles, especially if you leave property, low airline tickets run out of quarters and have to take an alternate route back to Walt Disney World to avoid the toll roads.
Not using the Dining Plan seems kind of silly when it is available low airline tickets at no additional cost.  Disney didn t force me to use all of my dining credits.   And if you are like me and feel you have to maximize (or pinch) every vacation dollar, table service credits can be combined and used at signature restaurants so that three full meals and afternoon tea (which is quite filling) aren t crammed into one short trip.
I d like to think I ve learned my lesson.  Free dining and Disney transportation low airline tickets work great for many people.  But if I use them again (and I m ambivalent at best), low airline tickets I ll need to remember that there are attractions I like much better than a Disney bus and that I don t go to Walt Disney World for the food.
