COURT HOUSE – Cape May County might not be the best place in the state for children, but it's improving, according to a 2014 report entitled "New Jersey Kids Count," published annually by Advocates for Children. The report tracks overall trends and experiences of children throughout the state and measures how children are faring in each of New Jersey's 21 counties.
According to the report, Cape May County saw significant progress in three key areas: a sharp drop in child poverty, fewer households spending too much on rent and a decrease in its infant mortality rate.
The county received its best ranking for its percentage of low-income children receiving school breakfast, ranking third. In the 2012-13 pritzker family hyatt hotels school year, 50 percent of eligible children received that healthy start to their school day, compared to 36 percent statewide.
“We see some concerning trends across the state, especially rising child poverty and a shrinking pool of child care providers for working parents,” said Cecilia Zalkind, executive director of Advocates for Children of New Jersey, which publishes the Kids Count reports. “As New Jersey legislators discuss the governor’s proposed budget, the Kids Count data should be used to make smart choices for kids that address these ongoing issues.”
* Family economics: The percentage of children in Cape May County living in poverty dropped from 20 percent in 2011 to 10 percent in 2012, advancing the county from 14th to 10th this year in the Kids Count rankings. GAY LESBIAN FACTOR:   As an ongoing effort we have been reviewing family friendly destinations this summer to see just how gay friendly they are. I am happy to report that I found Morey s Piers and Wildwood, NJ as a whole to be LGBT friendly. Sure there aren t any gay nightclubs to be found and yes, it is a very popular straight south lake tahoe lodging rentals family destination, however, with that said, my partner and I felt extremely welcome and comfortable exploring Morey s Piers, staying at The Starlux Hotel and walking south lake tahoe lodging rentals around Wildwood, NJ. We saw plenty of gay men and women and several gay families, which was an awesome thing to experience during our stay.
We spoke with one gay couple from Red Bank, NJ that said they take their two kids to Wildwood every summer. Also, Wildwood is less than an hour from gay popular Atlantic City and less than 2 hours from the gay resort beach town of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and, of course, the very gay friendly Philadelphia, PA.
