Several major hotel and resort chains offer loyalty programs that travelers can take advantage of to realize price savings. For example,  Travel + Leisure  list Intercontinental, Hilton, Marriott and Hyatt as having some of the best hotel loyalty programs. Travelers who stay at the hotel chains 20 or more days a year can receive gold or platinum discount points. Similar to airline frequent flyer programs, the more points a traveler earns, the greater discount they receive on hotel rates.
Some hotel loyalty programs, like Marriott s loyalty program, run specials that allow travelers to receive a free one night stay after the travelers reserve and pay for two nights at the chain. Other hotels cut their standard rates for program members after they purchase a higher priced room. For example, if a member pays for a $300 hotel room, they can receive over 3,000 Marriott loyalty points to use toward savings on their next stay with the hotel chain.
Fairmont Hotels and Resorts offers travelers the chance to join their Fairmont President s Club so that they can receive discounts and price savings on room rates. Membership in the loyalty program starts from the first night that a person pays for and stays in a room at one of their hotels. After staying 10 times or for at least 30 days in a Fairmount hotel or resort, travelers gain a Platinum membership. According to the Fairmont President s Club official website, this membership level lets members receive hotel room upgrades, complimentary stays, spa gift certificates, guaranteed room access and savings on dining that is equivalent to $100 United States dollars.
Travelers can enroll in hotel and resort loyalty program directly through the merchant s website. To enroll in the program, travelers will typically need to provide their name, address, telephone number and email address. They will also need to create a username and password. After they enroll, all they need is their username and password in order to access their account and check the number of promotional points they have earned at any point in time since they joined the discount program.
To realize the deepest savings, travelers are advised to enroll in loyalty programs for hotel chains that have an international presence. Additionally, to avoid chewing up price savings earned through loyalty programs, travelers are advised to request non-standard amenities such as spa service, pet daycare and hourly Internet access fees which can run for $10 per hour.
When shopping for hotel deals, travelers are advised to look for deals that allow them to receive a refund on their hotel reservations should an event occur that causes them to cancel or change their hotel reservation. Before departing home, read hotel reservation confirmation print outs to be familiar with check-in and check-out times and guidelines. Not all hotels have a 12 noon check-out time. Some hotels allow travelers to check out later in the day, while some hotels might have a standard 11 o clock check-out time.
Bring one s hotel loyalty program membership card and a copy of the printed confirmation slip to the hotel in the event that the hotel computer system is down or malfunctioning. Most hotels require travelers to present the loyalty program membership card when checking in and checking out of the hotel. Be advised that membership cards are not transferrable. Members are responsible for paying any taxes associated with use of the card.
