A few hundred miles from proper civilization, Grand Canyon is a trip you want to plan well. For an overnight adventure, one must plan really well. At least four months in advance, as the permits need to be faxed on the 1 st day of the month!

Grand canyon and Niagara fa lls are the major two tourist attractions that America sells to the world; but when I learnt that the Niagara river was rerouted and a dam was built to control the amount of the water in the falls, I was quite disappointed. At least, the Grand Canyon is completely 'natural'.
Staying in the national park lodgings is highly recommended. There are only seven lodges inside the park and booking well in advance will keep your trip hassle free. Yavapai lodge is the least expensive of them. The rooms were small musty and you may think you are being over-charged. But think again, as it is in the middle of nowhere. I have stayed in Yavapai on one of my trips and the location did it for me. If you arrive after dark, it might be a bit hard to locate the entrance to the lodge as the access road is not well-lit. I want to say it is bumpy and undulating as well but I don't want to trust a memory from a sleepy cranky hungry state t hat I was in, during our visit.
Please do me a favor and wake up for sunrise. You needn't have, for the other 365 days (for the leap year that was 2012) but you really don't want to miss the magical s un on the canyon rocks. It takes a bit to drive around and find a place to park as everyone hotels in downtown dallas texas is clamoring to do exactly that. An early morning hike is a great thing to do; the weather is at its best.
