We will be flying kawasaki 500 vista cruise control Jan/Feb/Mar from Cleveland to the big island. Would really like to fly open jaw Jan 23 into Hilo, for a week and then rent a car and drive to Kona for the month of Feb, flying back home the first of March. This might be too expensive. So I'm asking if any one has comments/infomation/suggestions.
You can fly into Hilo and out of Kona to the West Coast of the United States. (or reverse) Check prices and if flights are not too full four weeks before the flight the prices can be great. Last January was the best tourist month for Hawaii since 2006 according to the local public radio station so late February or early March might be best. Check cars and prices on www.kayak.com and make sure it is reserved one month ahead of time. If a better deal comes along you can cancel and rebook a rental car. January is usually the rainy season but this year the rains were in late February and early March.
Make sure you check fares to HNL as well. Non-stop flights to the other islands from the mainland may cost more simply because of limited supply. kawasaki 500 vista cruise control Inter-island fares on HA is pretty constant and you can book them much later.
All that said, keep checking the usual sites (ka yak, travelocity, expedia, etc.). If you're dead set on spending a month on the Big Island, I think there are only a few flights kawasaki 500 vista cruise control to Hilo and their inter-island. Kona has way more flights, including to the mainland. kawasaki 500 vista cruise control Or, as suggested above, book a RT to Honolulu and then a short flight to the Big Island.
We always get best deals RT direct 4 hours LAX KONA cheapoair.com kayak.com/buzz good packages on priceline.com Hilo rainy old not touristic Kona is the happening place WAY less rain konaweb.com stayhawaii.com Less than $1K pp for a week at the Hapuna Prince last including air hotel car for us priceline.com .
Thanks everyone. Since two of you agree that a month is too long in Kona, instead of flying into Hilo and out of Kona, I think we'll just drive from Kona to Hilo on a couple of day trips. It's only 2 1/2 hrs. Maybe one day for the VNP and another day for Hilo.
Actually, Kona is on the west coast and Hilo is on the east side of the island. Driving kawasaki 500 vista cruise control from one side to the other and back is doable in a day, also consider all the walking around you'll do while at VNP etc, it makes for a long drive back to Kona. Keep in mind the drive is on roads that can be very tricky if you are driving at night and that the roads can be tricky as well.
Even taking day trips north and south, that still leaves a lot of time. We were in Hilo for 3 days and Kona for 8 days and we went in every direction and to several different snorkel spots and a different beach almost every day. A month would be good if you want to lounge about, kawasaki 500 vista cruise control but I think you will run out of places to drive too. Also keep in mind gas prices there! Perhaps a guide book - Big Island Revealed - will give you a better idea of what is there. Again, it's your call, just trying to give a bit of insight.
Thanks for the east-west lesson and the insight. We have placed a deposit for a month rental in Feb but I suppose that could be cancelled. We will do more reading, kawasaki 500 vista cruise control (I have purchased Big Island Revealed and it should arrive in a few days)and searching air fares, etc in the next couple months.
I would agree that with that much time you could be doing at least two islands, probably three. I just spoke with a man today who had 'done' 3 weeks on Maui and 1 week on the big island. I'd have turned that around, kawasaki 500 vista cruise control or at least done 2 weeks and 2 weeks; but that said, I'm not a 'lie on the beach' type of person. I like the driving and seeing places. I'd probably do 4 island! Oh well.... have fun planning, kawasaki 500 vista cruise control whatever you decide to do.
The reason for choosing a month is the rental cost is a better deal. We are not lie on the beach people either we like to drive and explore....but gas is $4.90 a gallon in Kona so I guess I better give that some thought.
Many times I don't even know which airlines or combination of airlines service my route destination. kawasaki 500 vista cruise control Once you find out all your options on Kayak, you can go to the individual sites (including airlines such as Southwest that aren't listed on Kayak) and see if you can do better or actually book your tickets.
lcuy pretty much explained it. I would also add that I usually find cheaper fares on travelocity, expedia, etc., than I do going directly with the airline (and yes, I always double check). And if you're booking kawasaki 500 vista cruise control a package with air, hotel and maybe a car, I have always done better with those sights. I just don't understand why anybody wouldn't shop around.
