It has been a big news week here in Mexico . As Los Cabos prepares to host the 2012 G20 Leaders Summit June 18–19, the country has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons due to a new U.S. Embassy alert warning Americans of a possible surge in violence following the recent arrests of people linked to the Los Zetas drug cartel.
The warning is legitimate, and the violence issues are real. But it's important to contextualize the information—especially when it could affect your travel plans to the Baja Peninsula and, more specifically, Los Cabos. Mexico is an enormous country, and the cartel- and drug-related violence affecting a limited number of states is physically far removed airline flight reservations from Cabo San Lucas and its sister city, San José del Cabo. In February, the U.S. State Department issued a new travel advisory, suggesting its citizens avoid travel to the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Durango, San Luis Potosi, Sinaloa, parts of Sonora, Zacatecas, and others. Caution was urged in Tijuana, too, where 34 Americans were killed last year in incidents related to drug trafficking.

In fact, Los Cabos is some 1,000 miles away from any real violence. As Alberto Coppola, present of the Los Cabos Convention and Visitors Bureau, recently told Los Cabos Magazine writer airline flight reservations Ed Kociela, "Los Cabos remains largely unaffected by those incidents of violent crime that are reported in the news media."
In fact, Baja California Sur has the fifth-lowest crime rate among all states in Mexico. And that rate is significantly lower than in many U.S. cities, like Miami. To avoid travel to Los Cabos as a result of these warnings would be like avoiding travel to Portland, Oregon, as result of violence in, say, New York City.
