It's the hurdle that electric vehicles must clear to be launched into the mainstream: range anxiety. But this time it isn't prospective customers paris bus tours who worry about running out of juice, Bloomberg reports , but renters who return to car rental agencies before their lease is up and trade their EVs in for more traditional gasoline-powered autos and gas-electric hybrids.
"People are very keen to try [electric vehicles], but they will switch out of the contract part way through ... they think they can't get to a charging station," says Lee Broughton, head of sustainability at Enterprise . Enterprise customers who rent EVs reportedly trade them in 1.6 days into the rental period on average, which compares unfavorably to the six- to seven-day rental periods of traditional, fuel-burning automobiles.
And if consumers want an EV with a range that exceeds 100 miles, they'll have to step up to a Tesla Model S , which can achieve a maximum of 300 miles but is in a much higher price category than vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf due to its exotic-luxury-car status. MPG Car Rental in Venice, CA, near the Los Angeles International Airport, rents Leafs for $99 per day, while Model Ss go for $500 per day.
I can't believe that regular rentals average 6-7 days. I would expect that the bulk of their rentals are business travelers. I travel roughly monthly for work (and so do all the engineers I work with), and it is pretty rare for me (or any of my coworkers) to have a rental that exceeds 5 days. The vast majority of our rentals are 1-3 days.
When I travel for work, I'm usually driving about 100 miles per day. Hotels don't have outlets in parking garages. Theoretically, an electric car should be superior. Unfortunately, battery technology is awful. When they can affordably get 450 miles on a charge like a car can with a gas tank, let's talk.
EVs are not well suited for rental car business. Think of these common scenarios: If you fly to another city and stay in a hotel. You don't have anywhere to charge an EV If you rent a car for a long trip, you don't want to stop every 100 miles to charge, if you can find a charging station at all. Even if you get the car as a loaner for driving within city, you don't have a charging paris bus tours station at home. In fact if I owned an EV, I would rent a gasoline car for occasional long distance trips.
It should be no surprise that today's electric vehicles paris bus tours make lousy rentals. I own a Chevy Volt and I would not rent an electric paris bus tours for business or pleasure. For today's EVs to be practical, you need access to a charging station either at your daily destination or at your residence. This is due to the slow rate of charging that today's EVs experience. Owning an EV has introduced me a new way of measuring charging ability, that is in miles per hour. My Volt, connected to a 240 volt charger, recharges at a rate of about 11.5 miles per hour. Half that for a 120 volt charger. For comparison, a gas pump delivers a gallon in about 10 seconds, so a car that gets 20 mpg recharges at a rate of 7200 mph. All EVs on the market charge at this rate except for the Ford Focus Electric (charges at twice the rate of the Volt) and the Tesla (when hooked up at their DC supercharging stations). Thus an EV needs to sit at a charger for an extended period daily if you drive any distance at all. This is OK if there is a charger at your destination or hotel, but the charging infrastructure available today is sparse, at best. So, imagine picking up an EV at the airport, driving 30 miles to a business meeting, off to a hotel for the night, another business meeting the next day, then back to the airport. A trip like this will deplete the entire charge of an EV. Without access to a charger for about 4-8 hours, the renter will be calling the rental paris bus tours company's 800 road service number. I have 3 charge station apps on my phone and rarely find charging stations convenient to my destinations near home or on my business paris bus tours trips. So, gas rentals for me for now and every day charges for my Volt at home.
Revolutionary new technologies are en-route that can provide on-board recharge power and turn future cars into power plants, able to sell electricity when suitably parked. No wires needed. Cars, truck and buses might even pay for themselves. These are hard to believe breakthroughs. THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COOLS has been invented that needs no fuel and exhausts cold air. See NO FUEL ENGINE and CIRCUMVENTING SECOND LAW at www.aesopinstitute.org These engines will not get hot. After a prototype is validated by an independent lab, small plastic desktop piston engines are planned that will run a tablet and recharge cell phones. Metal versions are expected to power homes 24/7 and replace all sizes of diesel generators. They will power emergency generators and provide an on-board recharge for some electric cars. THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COOLS will open a practical path to other revolutionary energy technologies - see MOVING BEYOND OIL on the same website. They can create a far faster reduction in the need for fossil fuels and point to an end to range anxiety.
@ Mark Goldes, Mark, I hope I appreciate a joke as much a most people, but a little investigation reveals that you hope to be taken seriously ! But before we get into discussing the merits of you invention, would you mind answering a couple of questions to ensure that you are not being maligned. Are you the same Mark Goldes who: A) In 1976, told investors you could produce a nearly production-ready, road-worthy, wind-propelled, wind-rechargeable windmobile that could reach 60 mph ? B) In the 1990's received $ 400,000 as a Innovative Research grant from the US Air Force to develop a non-existent Room Temperature Superconductor ? . C) Have you ever produced a superconductor of any sought ? D) During 2005, deceived investors in a company called MPI, by claiming the company could develop Magnetic Power Modules based on Virtual Photon Flux. ? E) By 2008 were you seeking investors in a magnetic energy technologies scam called POWERGENIE (Power Generation of Electricity by Nondestructive Interference of Energy) capable of powering an electric car for more than 4,800 miles with no need to plug-in.? F) Did you inform unsuspecting investors that you had test driven such a devise and established it's viability ? G) Make false claims as a CEO that MPI would reach a revenue of $ 1,2 billion based on audited and confirmed projections ? I) As recently as 2009, advertised for in Chava Energy Inc, a company responsible for developing the commercialization of hydrinos. ? J) Would it be accurate to say that Hydrinos does not exist outside your imagination paris bus tours ? K ) You now claim to have developed a Self Powered paris bus tours Internal Combustion Engine ? L) You are not currently, or over last 29 years been a patient of a Psychiatric Institution paris bus tours ? M) Suffering a Delusional Personality Disorder ? N) A Confidence trickster ? M ) Dan Frederiksen's evil twin ? If in the unlikely event that you are none of the above, then just power-up the ol' Self Powered Internal Combustion Engine , and drive over to Fox News. I'm sure Glenn, Rush, and the rest of the gang, would love to promote your inventions !
Show us the product.. You can talk all day, sell to investors, sell plans on the internet.. but until I see a working product I'm going to call this total, weapons-grade balonium. Otherwise known as Bovine Feces. Or B.S.
It's my experience, that Resort tourists, are quite delighted to try renting an EV, (especially two-wheel) as a novelty while visiting a resort, as destinations and charging facilities are all easily within paris bus tours the vehicles range. However, renting a vehicle from an Airport or similar is more difficult as the rental driver paris bus tours is less in the mood for adventure, and unwilling to move from the familiar. As EV ownership expands, and more people paris bus tours are familiar with EV operation, EV rental will increase correspondingly.
Probably range common sense. Last time I rented a car it was for a Detroit show at Cobo Hall. Would not want my geeky car crapping out in that neighborhood. I asked a local where Cobo Hall was and got a middle finger and loud frack you! lol
@ edward.stallings C'mon, admit it, you just love upsetting EV enthusiasts with these silly comments, don't you ? Maybe we could create a special competition for you and DF, to see who can post the most outrageous nonsense.....
paris bus tours Well, duhh!!! My ***EMERGENCY*** fuel light turns on when I have 40 miles range left. In real world conditions, you're virtually driving on empty on electrics right now, and its just not worth the worry. Gas on a 87octane 40mpg vehicle just isn't expensive enough yet for it to make any sense to a rational person that isn't choosing electric as a political/environmental statement.
