Our closest airport is Hilton Head Island. It is the shortest sites that compare airline travel commercial sites that compare airline travel runway sites that compare airline travel in the USA and serviced only by US Airways with prop planes sites that compare airline travel to Charlotte. In the last month, I ve had several occasions to shop for flights originating from HHH and found lower award ticket sites that compare airline travel prices with United Airlines, sites that compare airline travel their Star Alliance partner for now.

US Airways uses a three tier system at 12.5K miles low tier, 20K medium tier and 30K high tier. Twice I ve been able to find United awards at saver levels while the lowest available with US Airways was mid-tier and 20K. That just makes no sense to me. And to further confuse the issue, the flights that had availability were entirely different flights and times.
Our tiny little island is serviced sites that compare airline travel with 6-8 flights per day to the Charlotte hub just a bit over one hour away by air and over 4 hours away by car. As award availability becomes tougher with higher flight loads, I m finding that award space out of Savannah (50 minutes away) on United is mostly available on the early morning flights to Chicago and Washington. Real early flights like 6 and 7 AM. And the award availability on flights sites that compare airline travel returning to SAV all seem to be on the late arriving flights, after 10 PM.
And strangely enough, I also found the flights from HHH are really competitive with those out of SAV, where there are all the majors sites that compare airline travel (United, American and Delta). I just found flights from Sioux Falls, South Dakota cheaper to HHH with one carrier than SAV with all. Over capacity to HHH? We certainly are seasonal sites that compare airline travel and that may account for some of the price reductions, but we have always been seasonal and this is the first time I have ever seen prices lower to Hilton Head.
So my question is: Are you finding shifting prices in your markets sites that compare airline travel as well? To the best of my knowledge, the Island of Hilton Head is not subsidizing the US Airways flights sites that compare airline travel to cause the price disparity. What is going on in your neck of the woods? Any major shifts in your marketplace that would cause you to relook your departure airport?

If you re searching segment by segment, you should see that the only US Airways flights that United has access to are the ones that price at 12.5k each way. What may be happening is you re searching for your whole trip, and the United site is matching a US HHH-CLT flight sites that compare airline travel with additional UA flights that are all at Saver level. These won t show up on US s site because their site does not show any partner availability.
