So who doesn’t enjoy a good “hole in the wall” and there is no better place to find one than “off the beaten path”, where the line between a hole in the wall and that beaten path can sometimes be a very fine one. Occasionally, just a few feet in fact! In our journey to find and share great off the beaten path places while visiting us here in Costa Maya, we ourselves stumble on a new jewel every once in a while. It might seem a bit unusual to mention 5 th Avenue Playa Del Carmen, with anything “off the beaten path’. After all, it is a busy, crowded international tourist destination, that is fast becoming known as one of the world’s more cosmopolitan glamour destinations. Great restaurants and clubs are everywhere and the shopping for all the usual, and some of the very unusual, Mexican goods line the street for many more blocks than most care to walk. Some do not even have web sites and do only walk up service, so finding them is almost impossible. This week, we found one in one of the Avenues better restaurants, Casa Adele. Located in the heart of the 5 th Avenue district, this place is very well known for its food and art gallery décor of spectacular local art. However, in the back of the property, nestled in the trees, is a new little 8 room hotel. The only indication this wonderful little oasis exists, was a tiny little sign out front, on the otherwise very busy restaurant book airline ticket online front, that says “Hotel Casa Adele: $550 pesos”. Very easy to miss and kinda’ like blinking as you drive through the small town, so to speak. You’ll probably miss it.
The owners gave me the tour that went from the beaten path, their dining room, past the kitchen and offices, to the Hotel Casa Adela. Recently they decided to expand the business and use the back portion of the property as a small hotel. book airline ticket online Half the rooms are new and the others are remodeled older buildings. All are very nice, with A/C, internet and private baths. The rooms were very clean and of course nicely decorated with local art. The hotel area had lots of big trees and a nice cool shaded jungle ambiance. When we were there, several of the guests were sitting inside the restaurant, drinking coffee, using the internet and enjoying the interesting vibe of the restaurant and staff. Fun place and very nice people!

Finding these sort of hotels is a lot like trying to spot animals in the forest. You have to know they are there and be looking for them to ever actually see them. However many, like Hotel Casa Adela are part of several operations on a single property, making the hotels not easy to find. Posada Freud for example has a restaurant and music club in front, with a small little hotel in back that is very nice and cozy. Hotel Jardin de Marieta has a garden area with small art galleries and a wine bar in front and a small hotel in the back. You feel like you are off the beaten path, but you are just a few steps from Cosmo Mexico at its very best!
