I would agree with the bus, colectivo or taxi recommendation. Car rental folks are notoriously slow and you can waste an hour just waiting for them to take your info, get the car (cars are not permitted down by the ferry terminal), etc. What kind of touring, where are you thinking alaska land travel disabled seniors of going? There are much easier options than renting a car.
"If you are planning a trip to Playa Del Carmen, be sure to ask us about Car Rentals there also !! Located in the Lobby of the Hotel Casa Tucan located on Calle 4 norte Manzana 10, Lote 5, between 10 and 15 Ave. - Playa Del Carmen
There are many car rental agencies on 5th ave, just a short walk from the ferry. Most of the local ones like America and Ace are a lot cheaper than the major chains when you add in all the insurances. You DO want all the insurances when renting in Mexico. We've used America several alaska land travel disabled seniors times with no problems. Driving in this area is quite easy once you get out of busy Playa. You'll be able to explore Tulum, Akumal, cenotes, Coba, etc.
Yes, there are a few but, if you do not have a reservation, you will waste time waiting for them to round up an off-site car, play the let's make a deal game, and then bring the car to you. Should be an hour long ordeal. Email them or Isis before you get there. I would never recommend America/American/Caribbean as a rental company. Hertz has a rental booth on 5th but you can wait forever for them to get the car. Ace/Executive is a better choice if needed alaska land travel disabled seniors in my opinion. Easyway has not been getting good reviews lately and I've used them a lot in the past which is unfortunate now.
Absolutely take all the insurance. It's not that it's hard driving around at all. It's understanding that some of the rules are different in Mexico then elsewhere and you should know them. Also know the gas station challenges, all about topes, obeying speed limits even though they may change at a moments notice, and what to do if you are pulled over. There is much information on these topics if you do a search online. DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN YOUR CAR - either seen or unseen. Make sure you document the scratches, etc. and check to make sure you have current tags and a spare tire.
MontserratLCo: I think you completely alaska land travel disabled seniors misunderstood the OP. They are staying on Cozumel....they are flying directly to Cozumel. They want to take the ferry to Playa for a one day visit and want a car to drive around to do some exploring.
Just to set the record straight... alaska land travel disabled seniors there is NO car ferry from PDC. It used to be in Puerto Morelos but has been closed for quite a few years now. Today, you need to go to Calica which is appr. 10 minutes south of PDC and it is very important to note that if you have a rental car, you will NOT be allowed onboard. As far as TOURING ON THE MAINLAND goes, I suggest you plan ahead, know where your going and make it a several day excursion rather than a single day... alaska land travel disabled seniors it's just not worth all the time and logistics involved. If you do go ahead, you will find the roads to be well maintained, safe and hassel free. There is so much to see and do, I would encourage you to go ahead and do it. Visit Tulum, Coba, Puerto Morelos, Cancun, Valladolid, Chichen Itza, Merida etc. and follow Colokid's advice on the details.
If you do not want to do the driving yourself I would highly recommend tours with Yucatreks. I have known the folks who own this company for years and have used them when friends come to town. They do a great job, use small vans and are very responsive to requests.
