Today (2012/2013), the 757 is old like the 727-200 was old in the early 90s. Remember at that time, when American was phasing out the 727-100s, the 727-200 (American had 125 of them) retirement was beginning. The last 727-200 left in the early 2000s.
Some of these stored 757s of American Airlines are lease rejection aircraft that American is returning while in bankruptcy either because they no longer want the aircraft because they are OLD or the lessor educational student travel will not lower the lease rate. Therefore American returns them to the lessor while in bankruptcy and the lessor has the deal with the aircraft.
