To Carnival Cruise Lines and its ad agency, it must have seemed like a good idea at the time to come up with the TV spot, "Land vs. Sea: Summer Vacation." The TV spot features a family caught upside down on a stalled roller coaster.
It said, in part, "The creative treatment greatly insults around the world plane tickets for americans many of our members who operate roller coasters around the world. The event illustrated is an anomaly within our industry and to present such an event in any context other than that is ill-advised. Would you and your colleagues take offense if another organization incorporated recent Carnival news footage into their own marketing efforts?"
I mentioned Carnival's campaign to my friend Sam Singer, who is considered an expert in the field of crisis management. His high-profile clients have included the San Francisco Zoo (after a guest was fatally mauled by a tiger); Foie Gras producers when they were targeted by the legislature; and Chevron, whenever something goes wrong anywhere in the world.
Because of his skill in turning around his clients' bad news, Sam has been dubbed "The Fixer" by the San Jose Mercury News, a "Top Gun for Hire" by the San Francisco around the world plane tickets for americans Chronicle and one of the most powerful people in San Francisco by 7X7 Magazine. He also is one of the funniest people I know.
"It's hard to imagine that Carnival didn't consider the downside around the world plane tickets for americans of poking fun at the amusement industry," he said. "The very first thing you do when you're creating a messaging campaign around the world plane tickets for americans is to sit around and be critical - what would your opponents say? In this case, we're talking landlubbers - which includes most of the U.S., plus Alaska around the world plane tickets for americans and Hawaii."
He added that the amusement industry's letter to Carnival was "classy," noting that it didn't invoke any of the cruise lines' recent woes. The letter even thanked the company for its "prompt response to our request."
In fact, this raises an interesting around the world plane tickets for americans issue. When I talked with David Mandt, the amusement park industry's vice president of communications in Washington, he told me that the line between the two industries is beginning to blur.
Disney for example, operates a very successful cruise line for families. Cruise ships now feature carousels, bumper boats, rock climbing walls and zip lines, as well as, elaborate stage shows (many of which are produced by former theme-park industry members).
The way I see it, with those sorts of numbers, stuff is occasionally going to happen. But as someone who runs a park (rated Number 23 in Bay Area attractions for attendance), I can tell you that we do everything humanly possible around the world plane tickets for americans to ensure the safety and enjoyment of the 191,000-plus guests we serve each year. We recognize around the world plane tickets for americans that we live in a glass house that matches our glass slipper.
C.J. Hirschfield is Executive Director of Oakland's Children's Fairyland, the first storybook theme park in America. She writes around the world plane tickets for americans a weekly column for the Piedmont Post, and serves on the board of directors of the Lake Merritt/Uptown Community Benefit District as well as the California Attractions and Parks Association A 20+ year resident around the world plane tickets for americans of Oakland, she is also former chair of the City's around the world plane tickets for americans Library Advisory Commission and feels blessed to be able to walk or bike to work.
