At the invitation of the Minister of Music in Slovenia, the Highland Park High School Wind Symphony


At the invitation of the Minister of Music in Slovenia, the Highland hampton inn cocoa beach Park High School Wind Symphony has been invited to perform during a month-long national music festival in Slovenia. The band will perform two concerts in Slovenia, one in the city of Lasko, the home of the Lipizzaner Stallions, and the other in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, The HPHS Wind Ensemble has also been invited to perform at an international music festival in one of the great music centers of the world, Prague, in the Czech Republic. The Young Prague 2012 international music festival will feature music performance organizations from 20 countries featuring over 1000 performers between the ages of 14 and 26.
The HPHS Wind Symphony is not a newcomer to performing on an international stage. Previous invitations have taken the band twice to China, and also to Japan and to Italy, while the HPHS Jazz Ensemble has performed in Mexico and also in Prague. The band's performance in Japan was at the invitation of the Yamaha Music Corporation with the HPHS Band being the first American band to be invited to perform at the All-Japan Band Festival. Last year the band participated in a regional music festival in Italy which led to this year's invitation to perform in Slovenia and Prague. Dr. James Hile, the director of the Highland Park High School Bands, said, We have been very fortunate these past several years to be invited to participate in some wonderful international events. The trip to the Czech Republic and Slovenia certainly presents incredible opportunities educationally, culturally, and musically for our students. In order to prepare the students to gain the most from the trip experience, extra evening rehearsals have been combined with cultural hampton inn cocoa beach sessions to introduce students to the new languages they will experience, along with art, architecture, and European hampton inn cocoa beach history of the region.
Sixty-five students will be participating on the week-long trip during spring break. The band will fly to Venice and visit St. Mark's hampton inn cocoa beach Square and Cathedral, home to some of the greatest music of the Renaissance. The band will then travel through the coastal region of the Adriatic Sea into the beautiful Southern Alps for the concerts in Slovenia. An exchange concert in Lasko will also feature the Lasko Band, one of the oldest bands in Europe formed in the 1300's. After the performances in Slovenia, the band will travel to Vienna where they will tour the Hofburg Forum, the Schonbrunn Palace, hampton inn cocoa beach the Museum of Fine Arts, and hear a performance in the Vienna Opera House.
The Young Prague 2012 Music Festival will include an Olympic-style parade of all the musicians through Old Town Prague culminating in a combined performance featuring all 1000 participants in the music festival. The HPHS band will be featured in two performances at the festival, one a competitive performance that will feature the music of the great Czech composer Antonin Dvorak and a contemporary work by the American hampton inn cocoa beach composer Frank Ticheli. hampton inn cocoa beach The second concert will be an outdoor concert that will feature a variety of American and Slavic music. The band will have an opportunity hampton inn cocoa beach to visit the Charles Bridge, Old Town, the Prague Palace, and also has a special invitation to tour the famed Holocaust Museum in the Jewish Quarter. The final night of the festival will conclude with a reception and dance for all the musicians where the students will have the opportunity to meet other students from around the world.
There are three upcoming performances which are free and open to the community to hear this fine high school band, recipients hampton inn cocoa beach of numerous awards and accolades, including the 2010 Highland hampton inn cocoa beach Park Mayor's Award for the Arts. On Thursday, March 15, from 1:30-2:30 PM, the band will perform at the Highland Park Country Club as part of the regularly scheduled performances for the Highland Park Senior Center. On Sunday, March 18, at 3:00 PM, the band will perform hampton inn cocoa beach a "Send-Off Concert" featuring the lighter music to be performed on the tour, including hampton inn cocoa beach a variety of American and Slavic music: Leonard Bernstein's "Slava!," Carl Friedemann's "Slavonic Rhapsody," Eric Whitacre's "Cloudburst," Arban's "Carnival of Venice" featuring senior euphonium Spencer Hile, and a variety of marches by Johann Strauss, Julius Fucik, and Sousa. On Tuesday, March 20, at 7:00 PM, all three of the concert bands at HPHS will be featured on an early spring concert entitled "Metamorphosis." hampton inn cocoa beach The Concert Band will perform "American Riversongs" and Bizet's "Farandole." The Wind Ensemble will perform "Irish Tune from County Derry" and Holst's "Jupiter" from The Planets. The Wind Symphony will conclude the concert hampton inn cocoa beach performing the competition music to be performed at the music festival hampton inn cocoa beach in Prague: Dvorak's "Carnival Overture," Elgar's "Nimrod" from Enigma Variations, and the powerful finale of Frank Ticheli's Symphony No. 2, "Apollo Unleashed."
