From January find cheap airline tickets 2014, the number of cruise ships allowed to pass through the Giudecca Canal in the heart of Venice will be cut by 20%. Meanwhile, vessels weighing more than 96,000 tonnes will be banned from November 2014, until a new canal route is constructed allowing ships to reach the city's main shipping terminal from the west. This diversion, which bypasses the centre of Venice, is expected to take around two years to complete.
Giorgio Orsoni, the mayor of Venice, expressed his delight at the ruling saying: "Finally the trend towards gigantic ships in the lagoon has been turned around... We've had enough of these mega cruise ships just metres away from San Marco; from now on there will be clear limits on the size of ships that can enter Venice."
Protests against the ships look set to continue, however. A spokesman for the anti-cruise lobbyists, who oppose the ships on aesthetic and environmental grounds, vowed to keep fighting in the hope of securing more stringent restrictions. Concerns have also been expressed about the impact of the proposed new canal.
Fear regarding the risk that the enormous vessels pose has grown since the disaster of the Costa Concordia, the 114,500-tonne liner which sank off the Tuscan island of Giglio in 2012, killing 32 people.
