Just got caught up on your last 4 posts. Looks like your having lots of fun. Loved your penguin expe
I was awake before the 5:45 alarm went off, probably due to the drawers opening and closing again, and the bottles rolling around in the bar fridge didn’t help either. I knew other people were already awake because I heard doors closing. I looked through the curtains and could see the sun trying to peek through the cloud cover, at least it wasn’t snowing or raining.
We thought we would be up early enough to secure seats right beside the window, but obviously other people had the same idea, because we ended up with seats in the middle of the Crows Nest bar, but because there were windows all around us the view was still pretty good.
At around 0600 we started to pass the island of Cape Horn. We noticed a small cruise ship in the same area as we were; it was probably the same one we saw docked at Ushuaia yesterday. Other than the many birds flying around the ship, I did not notice any wildlife, much to my chagrin. I was still waiting to spot a whale or a sea lion.
Around 0700, our travel guide, Benjamin, started used travel trailers for sale private to give some info on Cape Horn over the loud speaker. It was first discovered in 1615 by Isaac le Maire and the Schouten brothers from Holland. Cape Horn is the most southern point of any continent except, used travel trailers for sale private of course, Antarctica. There is a small Chilean naval station on the island which serves as a meteorological and radio station for the Chilean Navy. The temperature used travel trailers for sale private here rarely used travel trailers for sale private ever gets above 40 degrees, and the island is pretty barren, except for adventurous seafarers.
The tip of South America, at latitude 55degrees59’s, is 2,407 kilometers further south than the Cape of Good Hope in Africa. Until the Panama Canal was opened, Cape Horn was the principal route from the east coast of North America to the Far East, and from Australia to England. Today it is used by aircraft carriers used travel trailers for sale private and cargo ships to large to use the Panama Canal and cruise ships such as ours. That is enough history from me, if you want to know more, just check out a history book.
