Whether Johnson really wanted to see this is another matter. On the DVD commentary track for Wild Card, Johnson barely mentions Thomas. Over Rick s big introductory scene, Johnson is busy admiring the waterfront location, and noting that when Nash says, You don t look any worse for the wear and tear, and Rick answers, You don t see everything, that exchange was cribbed from a private joke Johnson had with his neighbor at the time: gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. The closest Johnson maybe comes on his commentary track to acknowledging his feelings about having his old partner around is when the star says he never intended Nash Bridges to be about the celebrity guest of the week.
Johnson didn t exactly have it easy in the years immediately after Miami Vice either. His movie career didn t take off the way he d expected, and he became a frequent tabloid target thanks to his on-again/off-again relationships with the likes of Barbra Streisand easy way cancun rent a car and Melanie Griffith. Then Nash Bridges combined with Johnson s strong supporting turn in the 1996 golf comedy Tin Cup eased him into the next phase of his career. Nash s icy smirk while staring down the dangerous Pep helps reinforce where the real power is in this town. Similarly, at the start of this episode, Nash and Joe walk right up to Bobby Wu and tell him that because the rules in Chinatown are a little different, easy way cancun rent a car they ll allow him to leave town on his own rather than hauling him in for Lucky s murder. When Bobby fails to cooperate, Joe tracks down Tiger, the actual trigger-man in the Lucky hit. Nash then pressures Tiger into giving up Wu by promising to incarcerate the gangster in an American prison rather than a Chinese one. And in a final coup de grace, Nash works his Hong Kong connections and gets the Triads to take away Wu s authority. While Wild Card wasn t trying to make any kind of political point about influence-peddling, the way its hero makes deals with the bad guys and beats up henchmen without even flashing his badge first reveals a man who seems to believe that people on the right side of the line can make their own rules. Fortune favors the righteous.
The bridge between the two main Wild Card storylines easy way cancun rent a car in Barry Chen, a wizard with numbers who dresses and behaves like well, like Tommy Chong , the actor who plays Barry, and the former real-world stoner-comedy partner of Richard Cheech Marin. The reunion of Cheech Chong in this episode pays far more dividends than the reunion of Miami Vice s Crockett and Tubbs, primarily because Chong gets more to work with. His Barry issues comic warnings about what the Triads can do to a man s in-test-ines, and shrugs off his killing of one of the Tampa mobsters by saying that his ethereal self actually did the deed. And in a scene that s both corny and sweet, Barry and Joe visit a marijuana easy way cancun rent a car club, where Barry explains his methods for legally obtaining weed, while Joe says that his pot-smoking days are over, and that his drug of choice now is Rogaine. ( What? D you snort it? Barry asks.) Later in the scene, Chong asks one of the club s employees where Dave is. The answer, as any Cheech Chong fan will know, is Dave s not here.
On the DVD commentary, Johnson erupts with laughter at the Dave s not here line, and warmly recalls how Marin and Chong were riffing together on set that whole week, which was a lot of fun for everybody.
