Ok, so you know those Hertz commercials where one person asks, did you rent from Hertz and the other guys says, not exactly well, I felt like I was living that commercial this past weekend.  My wife and I went down to Los Angeles this weekend last minute airplane tickets and we needed to rent a car.  So we did some research both of us use to travel a lot for work so we were somewhat use to dealing with searching for rates.  We started out with the usual suspects like Hertz, last minute airplane tickets Avis, and Enterprise, but being 4th of July weekend they weren t offering any specials and the rates were pretty high.  Most of them were quoting $40-$50/day for the smallest and cheapest car they had.  To us, that was just too expensive so we continued last minute airplane tickets looking for deals.
Eventually, we came across a company called Payless Rental Cars of course we had never heard of them and I m sure you haven t as well but, incase you were thinking of renting from them DON T!  The rate they offered was $25/day, which was about half of the other guys so we were pretty stoked on that, but we were a little nervous to rent from a car company that we had never even heard of and it turns out we had good reason to be.  After a little bit of debate we decided to go for it afterall the way we came across last minute airplane tickets them is through American Express they are listed on Amex s travel page oh, and yes we will be writing a letter to Amex recommending that they remove them from their list of business partners.
So here is the story we arrive at LAX and casually make our way down to the rental car shuttle pick up spot.  After every other car company s shuttle had been by us 3 times and about 40 minutes later a small minivan looking shuttle finally arrives to pick us up.  They take us to this very beat down building where we wait in line to confirm our rental and pick up the car.  The building is dimly lit, old linoleum floors (reminded me of the cafeteria in Jr. Hgh school), and consists of nothing but a long counter top and a few stained waiting chairs.  We actually don t wait longer than 5 minutes and my wife handles the check in while I m observing this operation that have the nerve to call a business.  While standing next to my wife I witness 2 angry customers complaining to a supervisor about how they ve been standing in the warehouse waiting for their car for over 30 minutes.  My wife asks the lady behind the counter what cars are available and then the lady says, hold on and let me see then walks out from behind the counter and disappears into the warehouse.  She comes back in about 5 minutes with a supervisor and tells us they only have PT cruisers..then proceeds to type in a number i assume this was the car #, that is written last minute airplane tickets on the supervisors hand hello?  Ya, that s write, the lady had to go look around in the garage/warehouse to see what was available and then they wrote down what car was available on the guys hand and then typed it into the computer.  Ridiculous right!
Then when they print out the receipt for us to sign they try and charge us $25/day for the first two days and then $35/day for the last day hello?  So my wife catches this and call them on it they tell us that is what our reservation was for thank god my wife came prepared and had printed last minute airplane tickets out the reservation which clearly contradicted what they had printed out.  Sure it s only like $10, but its the principle here.  The lady can t figure last minute airplane tickets out how to change it in the computer so the superevisor comes back over (the guy that had written the number on his hand) and proceeds to do nothing but waste our time.  He says he put notes in the sytem and that they will honor the rates we show on our printed confirmation, but that it will be corrected when we return the car.  Sure it will buddy, sure it will.
So, we think we re now home free finally getting out of this place we ll wrong again! We wait for a while trying to figure out if we go get our car or if somebody brings it to us.  Nobody is around except for a guy washing a few cars.  The lady had told us we got a white PT cruiser, but there about 30 of them and she didn t give us a car key or stall number.  Finally someone shows up, takes our receipt and then dissappears and returns with our SWEET PT Cruiser!  It s a brand new 2008 and is awesome!  Haha.  Ya right, not so awesome, but we figure last minute airplane tickets what the hell we don t really care as long as the dang thing runs.  We load up our stuff and finally get the heck out of there.
My wife and I are reminiscing about what an experience we just had when the gas light comes on yup, that s right, they gave us a car that was about 1/8th full of gas sweet!  Very convenient!  So, we get gas, which is expensive as hell these days as everyone last minute airplane tickets knows and then are back on the road and finally ready to enjoy our mini-vacation in LA.  We re down for a wedding in Orange County, but that s not until Saturday so we decide to cruise around and check out some of the beaches.  The day was pretty good great weather, a little too many people, but in all it was fun that was until we headed home.  Ya, that s right more car issues.
We pull up to a stop light and all of a sudden the engine dies.  Yes, we are in an automatic and the engine just dies.  We don t think much of it just thought it was kind of strange considering the car is seriously brand new (about 50 miles on it) but other than comment about how strange it was we just continued on our way.  It started right back up again and didn t seem to be an issue.  We went over to a friends house, hung out for about an hour and then got back on the road to head over to a BBQ with some more friends.  On the way to the BBQ the car dies again now we re concerned.  We re thinking we might be in trouble, but the car again just starts right up again.  Ok, now we ve got the radio off and listening to the car as we drive.  We pull up the next stop light and bam it does it again.  And this time the car will start again, but as soon as you put it in to drive it dies.  We put on the hazards and try several times to get the car moving, but we didn t have any luck.  My friend, who is now in the car with us, jumps out and he and I have to push the car across the intersection and into a shopping center.  Now we are cursing Payless car rental company.  We are officially pissed!  It s the 4th of July and we have to deal with this crap man, we are really pissed!
Ok, will continue story tomorrow .its past my bedtime and as you can see from the above story I ve had a long weekend.  Will pick up on this tomorrow whatever you do from now until tomorrow last minute airplane tickets DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM PAYLESS RENTAL CAR!!!
