Sleeping with the patio door open allowed miami hotel the breeze miami hotel from the ocean to fill the room, which resulted in each of us having some great sleeps these first few nights. We got out of bed around 10am and had a quick breakfast before we got ready and left to look into renting a car for a few days. We stopped by the front desk where there was a Hertz booth setup, but the guy wasn t there yet so instead of waiting, we walked up to Sunshine Car Rental , on the advice miami hotel of Greg, the Palms Cafe Bar owner.
The rate was $40 per day, but because we mentioned Greg s name, he knocked it down to $30 per day. That worked out to $150US plus taxes, but I asked if he could go lower than that. We ended up paying $130US for a mid-size sedan for five full days (Monday until Saturday). We declined the insurance because I put the car rental on my credit card and credit miami hotel cards insure things like car rentals, among others. (If you re planning on traveling, I d suggest looking into what your credit card covers, so you don t end up spending miami hotel additional miami hotel money.) Our blue Renault Samsung SM3 was cleaned up for us and we were on our way, me in the driver s seat and Julia in shotgun with the map.
Not knowing how big the island was, we decided to spend the first day doing some exploring and visiting a few different beaches. We started off making a left hand turn out of the car rental spot, and drove towards the airport. We continued through the Maho area of St. Maarten, then crossed the country lines into the French portion of the island. The drive continued until we say the sign for Baie Rouge (Red Bay) , and stopped to see the little cove that Greg had told us about last night at dinner.
Words can t come close to describe this beach, but I ll try. Amazing; miami hotel picturesque; gorgeous; unbelievable those are a few words I would use. We were asked if we wanted to rent chairs and an umbrella for $15US, miami hotel but not knowing how long we d be staying, we decided to just lay on our towels miami hotel by the water. It was a beautiful day a little overcast miami hotel with a nice breeze off the water, but intense heat from the sun. Julia I spent time lounging in the sun, then going in the clear water to cool off. We also had a pretty good view of Anguilla from the beach. After an hour, we packed up our things and resumed our drive around the island.
The next area we stopped at was Marigot , where we had some lunch at a French café. We walked around the little town and then drove towards Grande Casse , the main city of the French area of the island. Although Grand Casse had a lot to offer in terms of shopping and restaurants, nothing was open. Because September is the lowest season for tourism on the island, a lot of hotels, restaurants and shops tend to close completely for the month, to either vacation or do some renovations before the visitors start coming to the island in October.
The same experience occurred when we visited Orient Beach on our drive we saw maybe 10 people on the beach while we walked around, and very few beach bars or restaurants open. There were a lot of renovations going on, however. We weren t very impressed with the beach either, with a LOT of seaweed in the water and piled on the beach. miami hotel This clearly wasn t the norm, since everyone was telling us about Orient Beach leading up to the trip. It can only be attributed to September being the low time and the hurricane threats. We probably spent less than half and hour at Orient Beach before miami hotel continuing the drive towards Phillipsburg and returning to the Dutch side of the island.
Since we had already spent time in Phillipsburg during our stop while on our cruise, we opted to just make a quick drive through the city before heading back to Simpson Bay. Phillipsburg is such a great little city, with the teal coloured water. We ll definitely be back to Phillipsburg to spend a day or two, later in the week. Before getting back to the hotel, we stopped miami hotel at the grocery store and scooped some more water and snacks for the room. We went down to Topper s and had a couple miami hotel of drinks and played miami hotel cards at the bar. The sun was going to be setting soon, so we went into the water and watched the sunset while we swam around. Seeing the sun descend into the water way off in the distance, without buildings miami hotel obstructing the view, was pretty awesome.
miami hotel We decided to make the drive into Maho for dinner and chose the Sopranos Italian miami hotel restaurant . I had the penne sausage and Julia had the penne arrabiata, neither miami hotel of which were very impressive. The sauce was rather miami hotel plain and lacked flavour. One of the funnier parts of the night was when Julia got up to use the facilities, and almost fell over because her foot was asleep. We both had a good laugh about that. After dinner we stopped at Lee s Roadside Grill for some $1.50US Carib beers, then ended the night with some drinks on our hotel balcony while we played cards.
