We arrived in the late morning from the airport by an arranged taxi provided by the hotel. We then rested, unpacked and checked out the neighborhood. At the Presidential Palace, we met friends and visited the Trevi Fountain, later enjoying dinner at a neighborhood restaurant with gelato for dessert!
After purchasing a Roma pass, we rode the hop on/hop off bus to the Colosseum (which provided a good audio guide) and took a private tour of the Vatican and Sistine Chapel. We visited the Colosseum again that night for dinner.
Next, we took a subway to the Forum and Palantine Hill for the day. The audio guide was very confusing; I highly recommend a private tour. We looped back to the Vatican on the hop on/hop off bus for the gift shop and moved from there to the Pantheon and Spanish Steps.
The manager, Stephanie, was very helpful dollar rental car company at the Hotel Assisi. Each evening there was a little dollar rental car company happy hour offering a glass of wine, lots of information and suggestions. So far, there had been no charge for the money we exchanged for euros.
From Rome, we traveled by train to Salerno and then by bus to Maiori. What a scenic bus trip! We stayed at the Hotel Panorama on the beach, which was two blocks from the bus stop. The restaurant La Vela next door was excellent! They offered lots of seafood, including calamari, shrimp and mussels.
The next morning, we ate a great breakfast of eggs, potatoes and bacon. We took a public transportation bus to Amalfi City to catch the ferry to the Isle of Capri and visited the Blue Grotto. A boat ride in Capri can take you to the grotto. From there, rowboats take you inside the cave. Beware, it can be very crowded!
On our third night on the Amalfi Coast, we planned on going to Pompeii, but everyone wanted to relax on the beach instead. That meant a lounge chair, umbrella rentals and relaxation! Our kids also rented kayaks. We did a bit of shopping in town for lemon pottery and Lemonicello liquor.
Once in Florence, we grabbed lunch at the Bar Galli and found their mozzarella insalata delicious! We had a reservation to tour the Uffizzi Gallery and then walked to the river and Ponte Vecchio afterwards. For dinner, we dined at my favorite spot, Trattoria Due G.
Our second day in the city, we took a cooking class through Florence Town school at 10 a.m. For the class, we shopped at the Mercato Centrale for cheese, olive oil and balsamic tastings and learned that the meat and vegetables were bought at the local market to be used in class.
We caught a vaporetti (boat-bus) on the Grand Canal right outside the train station to our hotel. We strolled to St. Mark s Square at night and listened and watched the dueling orchestras which sounded so beautiful!
One night, The train to Milan from Venice was our best experience yet. We visited the Duomo, the Tram touristico and saw The Last Supper painting by DaVinci. The Sprerga Hotel was quite conveniently located near the bus terminal for a ride to airport.
