Using code language like "shoehorning" people into tiny apartments, "squeezing" apartments into buil

1.  Conservative state senate Democrats Rodney Tom (D-48) and Tim Sheldon (D-35), who joined with the senate Republicans to form a right-leaning travel guide rock n roll london "Majority Coalition Caucus" yesterday—effectively snatching power away from the Democrats, who make up a nominal majority of the senate—have insisted that the move was about policy, not politics.
The News Tribune 's Peter Callaghan isn't buying it. "The coalition," he writes, "is designed to replace those politics with the coalition's stance against any increases in state revenue and for more reform of state government and education.
Callaghan also points out that had the state Democrats held onto the $25,000 they poured into Tom's campaign in 2010 and spent it this year on 17th District Democrat Tim Probst, they might have preserved their majority in the senate; Probst lost to Republican Don Benton by just 74 votes in a race that set the stage for the Republican coup.
2. Debates over transit often hinge on how much riders should have to pay for—the full cost of a ride? Nothing?— Seattle Transit Blog proposes a compromise: Base transit fares on income, rather than simply disability status or age.
San Francisco has a program to provide travel guide rock n roll london discounts to low-income residents; Seattle, in contrast, offers discounts only for youth, seniors, and the disabled. "I t's for precisely the same reason transit fares could be burdensome to the disabled and the elderly that the fares might be burdensome to other passengers with low-incomes: lack of money and more likely an acute dependency on transit," STB's Andrew Smith writes.
3.  Capitol Hill residents met last night to whine about tiny apartments changing the character of their neighborhood, arguing, in effect, that "those people" aren't welcome in their bucolic enclave. The micro-apartments, which include private travel guide rock n roll london bathrooms and shared living areas, are an affordable option for people who can't afford the sky-high rents in central Seattle neighborhoods.
Using code language like "shoehorning" people into tiny apartments, "squeezing" apartments into buildings, and putting people in "shoebox apartments," the story on last night's meeting, travel guide rock n roll london by KIRO , makes it pretty clear where the reporter stands.
travel guide rock n roll london 4.  But opponents of density are on the wrong side of history. According to the National Association of Home Builders, construction of multifamily homes is growing at the fastest rate since July 2008, thanks largely to Millennials (people 18 to 30 years old) choosing to live in cities, the Tri-State travel guide rock n roll london Transportation Campaign reports.
6.  In slightly less wonky news, Hanjin—the massive Korean shipping company—has reached a deal with the Port of Seattle to stay at Terminal 46 for another decade, at a cost to the Port of millions of dollars, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal .
wow, driving is down from 82.8 percent among boomers like me born in 1957 allllll the way down to 73.3 percent of Millennials who're what, born in say 1990? so they are 22 today? That's a whopping decrease from 82.8 to 73.3 or some 9.5 points in only what, 33 years, or an asounding shift of a quarter of a point a year.
Certainly this must be all due to increased preference for not owning a car, rather than other factors. Like millenials not having as much money as the boomers who are older and earn more; or millenials locating in trendy hip apts. in capitol hill where parking is freaking travel guide rock n roll london impossible, only to move later to lake city or burien the way their parents travel guide rock n roll london did; or things like, oh, a recession. Becuase a change of 0.28 points travel guide rock n roll london a year is so big. Who says there is a war on cars, right?
Seattle Transit Blog needs to check out some figures before they suggest a fare based on income -- with the median income of around $60,000 in King Co. there would be a lot of people paying a lot less at the fare box. The people that skew the average don't ride the bus. Metro might be in a world of hurt if their idea went through.
The average Metro bus rider has an income of about $60,000. Why are they getting subsidized transportation? Do people making $60,000 per year get food stamps? Do they get subsidized housing? Do they get subsidized medical care (medicare)? Hopefully, no. They why do they get massively tax-subsidized transportation from Metro and Sound Transit? What a stupid waste of hundreds of millions of tax dollars per year, subsidizing transportation for people who can easily afford to pay their own way. I would say that anyone who does not qualify for food stamps should travel guide rock n roll london be expected to pay 100% of the cost of their transit trips. Those who do qualify for food stamps should be able to get subsidized transit trips, also. Where does this sense of entitlement travel guide rock n roll london that transit riders have come from? What makes someone earning travel guide rock n roll london $60,000 per year or more think they deserve tax-subsidized transportation? This is truly a scandal and a financial disaster for our local governements, who could find much better uses for 100's of millions of dollars of tax revenue per year than subsidizing transit trips for people making $60,000 per year.
Gotta love the artful use of stats: compare the last year of the Clinton economic travel guide rock n roll london boom with the worst year of the George travel guide rock n roll london W. depression, and imagine that no one will notice. And ignore the uncomfortable fact (one that McGinn tried to lie about, by the way) that just as many Seattle residents live in a household with a car now as 10 years earlier, and that there are more households with three cars than there are with no cars. Now should we talk about the city's projections of bike commuting vs. the actual results, or is that unmentionable?
Yeah the misleading travel guide rock n roll london stats used by the transit obssessives are dishonest. These are stats massaged to advocate, and dishonest. It is the same as with the x is trending meme. Just dishonest. travel guide rock n roll london That is a major gripe I have with the Urbanistas, they are too weasely. Everything they say is massaged for advocacy and never straight forward. travel guide rock n roll london They end up seeming like disingenuous liars. They end up insulting the intelligence of good citizens. Do the urbanistas, and transit obssessives, really think that we are all so stupid as to not spot dishonest use of stats? Or are they so stupid they do not see that their massaging of stats is dishonest, and transparent to most good citizens? It ends up being disgusting. The urbanistas, and transit obssessives end up being disgusting.
attachment A, page 2: Many Metro riders have a choice about whether to ride transit. travel guide rock n roll london According to Metro's 2010 Rider Survey, 85 percent of riders have a driver's license and 95 percent have access to a vehicle. Metro riders also have higher-than-average income levels. According to the American
Community Survey, the average household income of King County riders is about $73,000, compared with the King County average of $67,000. More than half of Metro riders use Metro primarily to travel to work or schooL. In summary, Metro riders have options and without accessible, convenient transit, many commuters would likely turn to private vehicles.
