The first time I met Jim Carreker, owner of The Louise, was in Mexico. Jim is American, so when he started telling me about his property in the wine country I automatically thought it was in Napa or Sonoma, and wondered why I have never heard of it before. I quickly learned that The Louise is actually in Australia, about an hour outside of Adelaide in the Barossa Valley, an area famous for its superb red wines and names like Torbreck, Peter Lehmann, Penfolds and Charles Melton. Jim and his wife Helen moved there after spending 10 years looking for the ideal place to open their food and wine venture. With a belief that outstanding accommodation complements a memorable paul mccartney tour food and wine experience, and a concept that was new to Australia, they settled on a Marananga hilltop site, and opened paul mccartney tour for business in 2006.
With an open invitation to experience The Louise, I don t think that Jim was expecting to hear from me so soon, but after we were invited to fly on the inaugural Emirates flight from Dubai to Adelaide, and having arranged to stay at Southern Ocean Lodge for a long weekend, we just had to make the call and find out if there was room at the inn. There was, and a couple of weeks later we were in our Holden Caprice driving through the valley on our way to Marananga. Fifteen suites and one of the best restaurants in Australia is what the draw is here, for locals and visitors alike. That, and the combination of a world class chef, Ryan Edwards, and owners who know what they re doing and do it just right.
The style is clean, contemporary and neutral, but that doesn t mean that you won t be very comfortable here, you will. Choose paul mccartney tour one of the Seppeltsfield Suites for the best accommodation, but if you are only here for the night the Vineyard Suites are just as comfortable. Looking out over thousands of acres of vineyards and olive groves you could just lay back, relax and do nothing all day, but if you are up for it, take a walk or borrow a bike, as some of the best wineries in Australia are just minutes away. Back on property eat sparingly, and save yourself for dinner at Appellation . The food experience is one of those that you must do at least once in your life, and the wine cellar has all the best labels, all 500 of them..! Choose the 5 course tasting menu, and let Sommelier Cassaly Pihodnya match each course with her wine selections. Save room for dessert, sleep well and then enjoy breakfast on your terrace the next morning. We stayed for two nights and enjoyed every minute of it.
GBB Says: Leave the kids at home and spend a couple of days wining and dining in the Barossa Valley. Visit in the spring for the best weather, and make your restaurant reservations for Appellation when you book your stay..!
