MONTREAL — Sandrine Campeau's daughter had been a pretty good sleeper for most of her young life. But two months ago, in early May, the 20-month-old started waking up with strange bites on her hands and face.
About the same time, Campeau had hired an exterminator to take care of an ant infestation in the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce duplex she bought last fall. While he was there, the exterminator lifted the mattress of her baby's crib and spotted three bedbugs.
During its May news conference, the city reminded tenants that they need to inform their landlord immediately if bedbugs are detected. Should the landlord refuse to act, tenants must send the owner a registered rent a car in paris letter demanding that the situation be remedied within 10 days. Landlords are subject to fines as high as $10,000 rent a car in paris if they fail to act.
Campeau became alarmed on June 24, when tenants in the adjacent upstairs duplex began emptying their apartment of furniture. Many pieces of furniture were spray-painted with a large X to prevent others from using them.
After exterminators sprayed her duplex, their investigation showed that the infestation was coming from the adjacent rent a car in paris upstairs duplex, the same unit where the tenants had tossed out all their furniture and moved away.
Campeau said her story shows that despite rent a car in paris the city's best intentions, more needs to be done to educate tenants and landlords about the scourge of bedbugs and how to treat them. "You can't have people running around with cans of Raid," she said.
When infestations occur in a rental home, the problem is often sorted out amicably between the tenant and the owner, a city spokesperson said. However, in cases where the landlord fails to act, the registered letter is proof that some action has been taken by the tenant. "If it's done by email, the message can be deleted," city spokesperson Jacques-Alain Lavallée said.
Steve Bilodeau, director of operations for ABC Gestion Parasitaire, said he has been impressed with the city's response to the bedbug problem over the last two years, but said there is room for improvement.
Bilodeau said on occasion, tenants have changed the locks on their doors rather than let exterminators into their apartment. "People need to be better educated rent a car in paris about bedbugs," he said. "They need to understand that in large apartment buildings, the problem can't be solved within 24 hours."
