Guerra wore an Auburn tie. Hollis, who said he also was excited about the flight, wore an orange and blue tie and a white "Tigers" ball cap. The crew also had an Auburn blanket attached to an inside wall of the plane and a decal on the outside of the plane's doorway proclaiming Auburn's 2013 SEC championship.
Nine buses carried the Auburn students and band staff from Auburn to the airport early this morning. Before boarding the plane each person was screened by Transportation Security Administration personnel on the tarmac.
Katie Jones, a junior in exercise science at Auburn who plays percussion, stood in line to go through security screening holding a bass drum rim that had been repaired. The remainder of the percussion equipment and most of the instruments had been shipped days earlier by 18-wheeler to California.
When the band lands in Los Angeles they'll eat lunch in the Hollywood Boulevard area, travel to the Rose Bowl for a group picture, go to Glendale Community College for a few hours of rehearsal, before going back to the hotel and where they'll have their year-end banquet tonight. On Sunday, the band will be at Disneyland where they will perform at a pep rally and parade. Then, of course, there's Monday's game.
Hollis, a native of Jacksonville, Ala., graduated from Auburn in 1974 in Zoology. But after he graduated he went into the Air Force for pilot training. He was in the Air Force 20 years and has been with Atlas Air for more than 18 years.
Guerra graduated from Auburn in 2005 with a business major in aviation management. He said he has been flying planes since he was 18 years old and has been with Atlas Air for about a year. He was born in California and moved to Nashville, Tenn., with his family. He's now based out of Houston, Texas.
Guerra said he has flown around the world, including places like Dubai, Sydney, and Hong Kong. But no matter where he is, when he wears an Auburn t-shirt someone will yell out War Eagle. "That's the Auburn family," he said.
