And there s something about Ed and Nadine s back story that feels very similar to Matthew and Claudi

CARNIVALE has recently finished on James Net. It feels very much like an offspring of TWIN PEAKS--only weirder, darker and better. Just like TWIN PEAKS, it ends shockingly, having been abruptly cancelled after its second season, with one of its purest characters turning all black contact lensy and evil.
Anyway, those clever schedulers at JamesNet have replaced CARNIVALE with the second season of TWIN PEAKS. I remember watching the opening scene of the opening episode of this season when it was first broadcast and finding the elderly waiter who takes Agent Cooper s room service order as he lies bleeding on the floor, having just been shot by a mystery assailant, hysterically funny. It seems less amusing now. The humour on TWIN PEAKS seems to be its most dated aspect. When it s rooted in character, hotel discount booking it works. For example, hotel discount booking Leland Palmer s hair turning white and his sudden compulsion to burst into show tunes makes a kind of sense because we know his behaviour is coming from a dark and anguished place. hotel discount booking Ben and Jerry Horne (Ben and Jerry, geddit?) going into an impromptu song and dance routine along with him works less well because it s just zany for zany s sake.
First time around, I was disappointed when some of the teenage characters who started out as sleazy, sexy and dangerous in the first season--Bobby, Shelly and Audrey--became sweeter and more innocent (i.e. less interesting) in the second. The taming of initially subversive characters is such a common pitfall of conventional soap operas that it seemed strange hotel discount booking that TWIN PEAKS should make the same mistake. Re-watching the first episode, however, I wonder if perhaps it s a kind of double bluff. Having already depicted hotel discount booking what lies beneath a wholesome small town exterior, are Lynch and Frost deliberately attempting to show us what can lie beneath a blandly conventional television hotel discount booking format? The macabre, disturbing moments hotel discount booking seem almost more disturbing, or at least disturbing in a different way than previously, amongst the seeming blandness of second season (or its first episode anyway).
I had completely forgotten the scene in which the Haywards hotel discount booking invite hotel discount booking Laura s grieving hotel discount booking parents to dinner, and one of Donna s sisters recites an inappropriately haunting poem about Laura to them while the other sister hotel discount booking (a young Alicia Witt) plays something weird on the piano while wearing angel wings. Leland then singing Get Happy faster and faster until he spins out of control is both hilarious and heartbreaking.
There are lots of unexpected, intriguing, evocative moments in the opening episode: the sudden, unexplained vamp-like behaviour of good girl Donna (Lara Flynn Boyle, hotel discount booking when she had flesh and bones), Maddy s terror when she hallucinates a stain on the carpet, Audrey s fervent prayer for Agent Cooper to rescue her from One-Eyed Jacks, Coop s visions of the lovely Giant, and especially Major Briggs speech about a dream he has had in which his bad boy son Bobby was really happy, which then makes Bobby cry--I used to think that was a terrible scene, but it s really lovely. And then Ronette Paulaski coming out of her coma and seeing those horrible images of Laura s death.
And there s something about Ed and Nadine s back story that feels very similar to Matthew and Claudia Blaisdel s on DYNASTY: Ed married Nadine on the rebound when he was drunk and they were kids, and then couldn t bring himself to divorce her after he accidentally shot her in the eye. Now she s bonkers, suicidal but still in love with him ... and he s still in love with Peggy Lipton.

I think this is just a natural development for those characters. The danger was sort of a play for them in the first season, but ended with real danger for all of them; Shelly and Bobby were almost killed by Leo and Audrey finds out what kind of a man her father really is - and realises she s gone too far in her attempt to help agent Cooper.
I love Ed and Nadine. I love the way they are used as comic relief in the first season, especially Nadine, and how it all ends in tragedy when she tries to commit suicide and we learn the backstory in the first episode of the second season. Brilliant writing!
My favourite scene in this episode is another hypnotically long and strange one: James in the Haywards living room singing and playing the guitar into an old 50s microphone. He sings in a girlish falsetto completely at odds with his moody biker persona. Meanwhile, Donna and Maddy are sitting on the floor singing backing vocals and both looking at him seductively. When Donna finally notices James and Maddy looking at each other, she gets upset and runs off. Then she gets a phone call about taking over Laura s Meals on Wheels round, and Maddy has a terrifying vision of BOB crawling over the couch and lunging towards her.
I d forgotten all about the bed ridden Mrs Tremond and her David Lynch Mini Me grandson who does weird things with creamed corn. We don t have creamed corn over here, I m glad to say--it looks deeply horrible. I remember the Meals on Wheels characters being further developed in FIRE WALK WITH ME and The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer , the author of which, Jennifer Lynch, gives an interesting interview on the DVD.
I love Major Briggs. He s rapidly becoming my favourite character. (Perhaps the fact that he later became hotel discount booking Scully s dad on THE X-FILES has something to do with it.) The Log Lady s log tells him to deliver a message to Agent Cooper that has come from outer space saying The Owls Are Not What They Seem. This arrives on the same day that Coop learns his former partner Windhom Earle has escaped from a mental hospital. Coincidence? I think not.
Remember the specific scenes she acted that way? They all have something in common. And remember hotel discount booking the first scene with both Donna and Maddy at the RR? How does Maddy act when it starts? Click to expand...
Some people still stay Lynch and Frost did not know it would be the end of the show. They did know. There were plans for a third season, but they knew it would end with this. The original script is very different hotel discount booking from the one Lynch shot (Thank God!).
I love the final episode. It is really great and it is really an ending, even though it ends with cliffhangers. hotel discount booking But Lynch has also said that Bob could never win over Cooper. And Sherilyn Fenn has said that Audrey never dies - not even in the vault. Lynch has also said that what we saw was the end of the show - not the end of Twin Peaks. It lives on in the imagination of its fans.
My favourite scene is when Donna visits Harold the shut in. I find it very touching without really hotel discount booking knowing hotel discount booking why. I like the scenes where Donna keeps walking in on James and Maddy--very DYNASTY, but with real emotion underneath, and of course the scene where she shouts at Laura s grave: It s almost as if we didn t bury you deep enough! Nice to see Michael Parks from THE COLBYS as the latest in an endless supply of Renault brothers.

So it s like a spirit thing? Mr Log Lady s spirit passed into the Log and Laura s spirit hotel discount booking passed into her, er, sunglasses? I can t think about Josie and the doorknob yet, or my head will explode. Click to expand...
I really like Michael Parks as Jean Renault, but I have a problem imagine that he and Jacques are brothers. Perhaps since their characters are so different from each other. Bernard and Jacques on the other hand is more of the same.
Opens with a brilliantly disturbing and moving scene in which Leland confesses to killing Jacques Renault, the man he believes murdered his daughter. This then leads into a not very hilarious comedy sequence about Andy and his sperm sample. Meanwhile, Audrey s been pumped full of heroin at One Eyed Jack s, echoing Laura s death. However, the brilliant thing about Laura s death is that we saw how it impacted the entire town; Audrey s disappearance and kidnapping have no impact whatsoever outside of the scenes in which it is the main story-line. This compartmentalisation of story-lines is what disappointed me about Season 2 the first time round. Nothing else is allowed to matter in the same way Laura s death did. The anonymous food critic bit is a beyond-hackneyed sitcom device, but it s deliberately hackneyed hotel discount booking which I guess makes it OK.
Good bits: Harold reading Laura s diary to Donna, Josie begging Harry to rip the expensive new gown right off her back (yeah, baby!), and Dick Tremayne, who makes me laugh. He kinda reminds me of Spike from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.
That is true. But I think all this is very strangely written (even though I love Audrey). I can understand that it does not have any impact on the town, since it is a kidnapping and everyone knowing about it could be very dangerous... hotel discount booking but whatabout Donna? She knew Audrey was planning something. And where is Sylvia Horne, her mother?
And then again, the entire show takes place in a very short time, about two months. But you never really get the feeling hotel discount booking of that except for season 1 were every episode consists of day and night except for the two last ones.
A mostly nondescript, unfunny episode. The rescue of Audrey from One Eyed Jacks is remarkably half-hearted, as though the writers hotel discount booking had already lost interest in the story-line. It s like FALCON hotel discount booking CREST on a bad day.
Good bits: Jean Renault scheming with Blackie to kill Audrey, then scheming with Blackie s sister to kill Blackie. The pervy yet haunting story Donna tells Harold hotel discount booking abo
