The Handel Society auditioned for High Mass at St. Peter's, sending audition tapes a year in advance, according to conductor bed and breakfast inns Robert Duff. After being invited to perform, the repertoire was sent in for approval, and prior to the actual performance the physical sheet music was screened as well.
The group's tour had four stops: Naples, Sorrento, bed and breakfast inns Tivoli and Rome. In addition to the performances and sightseeing, the tour also had an educational component, with guided tours of Rome and Ancient Rome, as well as a private tour of the Vatican.
"Right before we sang at St. Peter s Basilica, this old man came up and asked in broken English when we were singing. Then, during the mass, I glanced over and he was grinning and giving a huge thumbs-up," said Colwell. "You step into a cathedral and think — this is where music was meant to be performed!"
