Sadly, I did not find a wine I enjoyed. The area is known for its Ice-wine but I am not a huge fan.
Summer is upon us and what better way to celebrate then to go on an Ontario wine tour. Most people think Niagara wines when they think of Ontario vintages. What many people don t realize is, Ontario also has a wonderful wine region in Prince Edward County. I have had the pleasure of touring both and thought it would be fun to share my thoughts on each wine region.
My cousin and his wife recently visited from England. They asked to do a wine tour of the Niagara compare rental car prices region since they were spending most of their holiday in Niagara Falls. We decided to book a tour with Niagara Vintage Wine tours and do their Full-day wine tour which included lunch.
The tour company picked us up at the hotel in a 12 passenger van. Our tour guide, Paul, was born, raised and lives in the local area. He was well versed in the geography, geology, and history of the region. It felt like a school trip with all the information he provided. He also had great knowledge on the wine making process, rules and regulations with VQA and the LCBO.
We visited four wineries in the Niagara-on-the-lake area. Each visit included free tastings and private guide to explain the wines we were tasting. We even were given a wine tour by two of the wineries; one by the owner himself.
Sadly, I did not find a wine I enjoyed. The area is known for its Ice-wine but I am not a huge fan. Wine is very much a personal thing. So just because I didn t find a wine I liked, doesn t mean you won t find one you like.
The staff at Konzelmann and Hinterbrook were very warm and friendly. The owner of Hinterbrook personally gave us our tour. The two larger wineries, Pellitteri and Peller, were too large and busy for me. I also didn t find the staff quite as welcoming. I guess I am partial to the little guys.
Having a tour guide and a ride was quite enjoyable. Hearing all the ins and outs of VQA and the LCBO was very interesting. It was also frustrating as a tax payer to hear how the smaller wineries really do not have a chance to get their wines into the LCBO.
Overall, it was an enjoyable day. It all comes down to the people you are with and the desire to have a good time. I will give my Prince Edward County review next and then let you know which region I preferred.
