The Sheraton Gunter Hotel in San Antonio is located right downtown and just minutes from the Alamo and the Riverwalk. The hotel has an old and classic charm about it and obviously has a lot of history, which is evident from the historical pieces sitting in the lobby (they have an old telephone operator s station) and the black and white images from San Antonio s early days on the walls.
When you first arrive at the Gunter, your GPS will likely take you to the front door, but parking is located on the side. Like most downtown areas, San Antonio has a few one-way streets, so you'll have to circle back around to get to the parking. You'll then be greeted cheap airline flights to chicago by a valet who offers you two parking options, neither of which is very appealing.
We found another option though. Just to the left when you're pulling out of the parking area, you'll see a small church parking lot. They offer parking for $8 a night, but parking is scarce or closed on Sundays for church services. Granted, there's no security, but we used it several times without any issues. Just lock your car.
Before parking though, I would definitely recommend unloading your luggage at the door. The bellman helped me keep two 3 year olds entertained while Troy parked the car and while we got checked in. He actually gave them rides on the luggage rack around the lobby and then gave us the run down of the hotel as we took the elevator upstairs.
The room we got was on the Starwood Preferred Guest floor, floor 11. It was quite large with two queen beds, a desk, a chair and a flat screen television. There was plenty of space for the two boys to spread out their toys and play without us feeling like we were tripping cheap airline flights to chicago on them.
The style of the room was very classic and traditional. I loved the wood shutters over all of the windows and the heavy drapes. The room did not have a refrigerator, although it had a cabinet for one. It did have a coffeemaker and ice bucket. My only complaint about the room was that the carpet was quite worn, especially in front of the bathroom and rather dirty there as well.
I was a bit disappointed in the bathroom. I believe that all hotels show their age in the bathrooms, as these are the most expensive aspects of a room to upgrade. The tub looked a bit old and the wallpaper did as well. The vanity area was way too small and was inset into the hallway wall by the bathroom, which was also small. It wasn't as fancy as you would expect from such a classic looking and otherwise lovely hotel. cheap airline flights to chicago The showerhead was also a bit low. If you're very tall, you might feel awkward showering.
Saying that, they provided the deluxe version of typical bathroom necessities including shampoo, cheap airline flights to chicago conditioner, shower gel (with shower puff), and little packs of Q-tips and nail files. They also supplied a set of disposable earplugs, because after all, there was some street noise in the evenings. We didn't actually need the earplugs though, as it wasn't that loud.
Other amenities of the hotel included an outdoor pool and spa, which they claimed cheap airline flights to chicago was heated. My body felt otherwise and even the boys weren't too happy with the cool temperature. I say spa, because it wasn't a hot tub. It was part of the pool and was not heated anymore than the pool water was, although it did have a jet that made it bubbly. The pool is located on the 5th floor and offers a nice view of the San Antonio skyline. cheap airline flights to chicago A small set of steps from the pool area will lead you to the fitness room, which was stocked with the standard hotel gym equipment.
The hotel also has its own restaurant, which we visited. Unfortunately we were not overly impressed by the food. We had fried shrimp that were very large and well battered, but almost too battered. It had a hint of not quite being done due to the thickness. We also had chicken and rice soup, which lacked quite a bit as far as the ingredients went. The service cheap airline flights to chicago was mediocre.
As Starwood Gold Club members, were able to access the Club Lounge on the 12th floor. This is one of our favorite aspects of Sheraton hotels. You get breakfast every morning and appetizers in the afternoons. It's always open for coffee, sodas and water throughout the day and evening as well. It's often available for an additional fee to other guests as well and is a great way to save on meals while you're traveling.
Overall, we did enjoy the location of the hotel. If you're visiting San Antonio for the downtown attractions, then this is a great place to stay. If you're really cheap airline flights to chicago just coming for SeaWorld, I would recommend finding a hotel closer to it because SeaWorld is quite a bit out of town.
