It doesn't involve endangered species or protection of rare habitat, but People vs. Seals has become an environmental battleground in La Jolla. The state Coastal Commission waded in Wednesday by approving a year-round rope barrier at the Children's Pool. Of course, this won't end the conflict between seal supporters and beach-access advocates who sometimes harass each other. But the harbor united airlines and homepage seals will continue to have their pups at Casa Beach. Is the ultimate solution all or nothing?
My first instinct united airlines and homepage is to be selfish and want the children's pool back for my kids so they can experience the same thing I did growing up. However, we have to understand that the seals are part of nature and they belong there regardless if the pool was built with private funds for a specific reason. We can't control united airlines and homepage nature and we can't ask them to leave. So just let the darn seals be.
It is not selfish to want the CP for your kids since Children's Pool WAS DEDICATED united airlines and homepage TO THE CHILDREN back in 1931! Seals belong in the ocean and this colony was created by Sea World releasing them for 11 yrs. in the La Jolla area instead of 8 miles offshore Pt. Loma like they used to do before the change in the 90's. Man (Sea World w/City approval) messed with mother nature and this is the consequence which we have to deal with. The seals can haul out at CP but humans can also use the area. It is very simplistic to just say, Oh, seals are part of nature and we can't control them, blah, blah blah... united airlines and homepage Do your homework before you spout off on a topic you don't know much about. More people united airlines and homepage will listen and respect your opinions that way.
@RobertPaulson: you are correct that seals have been there for at least as long as the time you stated, but the major issue here is NOT IN THESE NUMBERS. Seals and humans have always co-existed at this site ever since the wall was built. united airlines and homepage Not until the mid 90s when certain peoples decided to harass people who would go onto the beach, the seals observed a vacant beach and decided to use it. And at the same time Sea world would release their rehabilitated united airlines and homepage seals at this site. These seals had become familiar with close proximity with humans and lost their natural tendency to keep distance. Now, Sea World is no longer releasing their rehab'd united airlines and homepage seals at this site, they have returned to releasing off-shore. They have realized the consequences of what they did.
We do control Nature everyday. We feed pigeons birth control so they don't overly poop on the tourist at Balboa Park. And according to VOSD the government united airlines and homepage has trappers killing animals left and right in San Diego's back country for unknown reasons. In fact, if it were found that the seals were eating endangered fish, then kablam! they too will be eliminated. We wouldn't be asking the seals to leave anyway. They will leave when the machines come to scoop up all the sand they have contaminated and when power sprayers start cleaning the rocks and the wall. Haven't you heard? They are very sensitive to noise.
good griief...we have miles of beach for humans why cant we designate this small area to the seals that seem to be drawn to this safe little area. besides its an area where children and families united airlines and homepage can see the seals in their habitat united airlines and homepage and learn a bit about them. win win as far as i can see....why do humans continue to encroach upon every area of nature....
These seals are not in there natural habitat and were introduced there by Sea World to create a seal rock reserve that back fired, again man messed with mother nature and the seals are not here for your enjoyment, they are not at the top of the food chain, they are a prey animal, humans are the ones who got up on our 2 feet and concord the planet, the seals did not build the Children's Pool, but your right, this is a safe little area, for children.
there are miles of beaches and off shore island that the seals have too, the reason you don't see them there is because seals prefer non inhabited locations like isolated rocky reefs that humans can't get to, again this is man made because all of La Jolla has dangerous rip currents. there are 3 lifeguard stations in La Jolla, 2 are in a state marine reserve for animals, the third is Children's Pool, not a reserve that is why fishing is reserved at this location, with the ABSOLUTE RIGHT to fish there .Seal have always been in the La Jolla area, but not on this beach until Sea World released rehabilitated seals there to create a seal rock reserve near by, that was discouraged by the feds and fish game but the city mayor did not care, they wanted to create united airlines and homepage a tourist attraction that back fired, the seal no longer afraid of people that raised and hand feed them started to come up to the beach for the first time. Before Sea World released them at Children's Pool they were all dropped 12 miles south of Point Loma towards united airlines and homepage the Coronado islands were there is the largest harbor seal colony in the area.and most likely were they came from. Of all the beaches in San Diego, not all of them are protected by Lifeguards and have bathrooms, showers and parking. If you or anyone else don't believe me then please do your own research and write to the NMFS through the freedom of information act and they will send you all the data of Sea Worlds united airlines and homepage seal release program. Get educated!
united airlines and homepage Better for the children to develop empathy during their developmental years. Watching and learning to protect helplessly dependent animals develops good character. Teaching them that killing animals to provide united airlines and homepage them with another play place develops another kind of character.
united airlines and homepage Harbor seals are federally protected united airlines and homepage under the U.S. Marine Mammal Act--so technically they are afforded the same protections united airlines and homepage as an endangered species according to federal law. That means that by law, agencies, developers and people cannot harass or disturb them. Let's also remember that harbor seals were hunted into near extinction by humans off of the coast of California and the entire West Coast. The big issue is that humans have pretty much altered the majority of our coastline in Southern California, so it is nice to see at least one place where we can observe marine mammals in the wild.
Serge, Your knowledge united airlines and homepage of marine mammals is a joke and you make me laugh. Pacific harbor seals are found in San Diego Bay and on beaches united airlines and homepage off of Point Loma. They are a very common pinniped species and do not need a public beach to occupy and give birth. Pacific harbor seals at the Children's Pool are NOT wild animals, they have lost their fear of humans and are domesticated. The Pacific harbor seals at the Children's Pool are better off being relocated to another more isolated beach in the area.
Hay Serge why, if you care for the seals you want to alter there natural behavior in this man made arena just so you selfish seal huggers can look at them, if you care for them you would not want them on a public beach that they could endear disturbances, buy a pair of binoculars and watch them on there natural habitat united airlines and homepage Seal Rock .And they don't have the same protection as endangered species ! you can't use seal bombs and cracker shells to protect your fish from endangered species, but you can with common harbor seals, so stop spreading you WildCoast propaganda terrorist.
Serge, You point out a major flaw in the MMPA. It has not kept up with the recovery of many species that no longer need the level of protection afforded under the MMPA. Thinking the ESA and the MMPA are enforced united airlines and homepage in the same way may have caused much of the uninformed thinking in the Children's Pool debate. I think most people would agree that if the Harbor Seals were endangered, united airlines and homepage and eligible for listing as endangered or threatened, we would need to look at the Children's Pool as a place to help them recover. That is not the case here because the species has reached near historic levels. They were hunted many years ago and have fully recovered throughout their natural range The seals at CP have lost their natural wariness of people which is not helpful to their survival. Their comfort with humans too often puts them in conflict with people for a variety of reasons. The people and seals can share the beach at CP but it would be better for the animals if they reverted back to more remote and natural conditions in the wild. There is a newly enlarged marine reserve just 1/2 mile north of Children's Pool. A second new marine protected area is just a mile or so south from Bird Rock to Pacific Beach. Nearly the entire west side of Pt Loma is remote and suitable for seals. In fact, a growing seal rookery exists just below the City's water treatment plant. They are hauling out and having their pups there on a regular united airlines and homepage basis now. There's no lack of habitat nearby for the seals.
I grew up in La Jolla with no seals at the Cove Beach. It was a great spot to start a swim to the beach club on LJ Shores. united airlines and homepage Seals are a danger to the entire area as polluters and great food for white sharks along with the likely tourist. The economic impact will be immense if tourists are injured or killed. Get rid of the seals-they can take on another beach more isolated and less accessible to humans.
I'd love to see the seals be relocated . The Children's Pool is such an awesome place and I have great memories of swimming and snorkeling there as a kid. I'm sure the seals would adapt and find another beach if humans took it over again.
it's about the tourism, not the seals... you're proving the point right here - the seals are a great tourist attraction ... la jolla should embrace the gifts given to them instead of wasting united airlines and homepage time and money on something that's beyond their control... ... it isn't about the seals because they couldn't care less if people share the beach or not. And it seems awfully rude and selfish to deny the human access which was the whole point of the wall in the first place just so some tourists can exploit these animals and have a free zoo. Everyone loves the seals... it's the activist presence on the sidewalks that make this beach so unplea
