Travelling with two adults and two children (10 12) from Las Vegas to Yosemite (and then on to San Francisco). Thinking highway 95, drop into Death Valley for the Ubehebe Crater, come out again and stay overnight Beatty, then 266/168 to Bishop stay overnight and then Yosemite via Tioga Pass. Most RV companies say no Death Valley in this period but up the 95 and across seems to be a reasonable workaround without having to do the less interesting loop via Bakersfield. Any views?
You do have other options available. As mentioned you wouldn't have to go via Bakersfield, you could go through Barstow to 58 and then head north on 395 via Lone Pine, Bishop and Mammoth Lakes to Mono Lake, making an overnight stop at any of those places. Keeping on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada means you get to drive the spectacular Tioga Pass [CA120] over the high ground of Yosemite and down into the valley. Although if you went via Lake Isabella/ Bakersfield, Sequoia NP would become an option, although you would have to check the lenght restrictions on the 'Generals Highway' in the park. You can gain access to most of the attractions, the BIGGEST [literally] is the General Sherman tree, the largest living thing on earth.
You could also head north out of Vegas [possibly visit Valley of Fire State park] and then take US93 to NV318/375 aka the 'ET Highway'. In Rachel you will find the Little'ALE'INN of 'Area 51' fame. You can get food and drinks here and check out the 'out of this world' photos on the walls. As you get get to US6 you will find the building remains of the once small community of Warm Springs, originally an old stage coach post. There is a hot pool here which is fenced off although there are a couple of holes in the fence, close to the 'Keep Out' sign ! A short walk up the hillside you will find the source of the Hot spring seeping out the rocks into a natural pool, beware the waters discount car rentals in philadelphia hot !
After Warm Springs you will come to the old mining town of Tonopah, 'Queen of the Silver camps'. This would make a possible location for an overnight stop although just west of town on US6 you will find 'Millers Rest' with free overnight parking. There is not much there, but it's a good spot to get a nights rest in an RV. It's quite desolate along this route, but that in itself we found appealing.
