Lisbon is a popular tourist destination in Portugal that is situated on the right side of Tagus River. It is the continental Europe's westernmost city and near the city of Algarve. Lisbon's climate appeals to many tourists because it enjoys mild winters and long days of summer. The hottest month is August while the coldest months are December and January.
The history of Lisbon dates as far as 300,000 years ago when Ulysses named the city "Ulissipo" or "Olissopo". Those words originated from "Allis Ubbo" which means an "enchanting port" in Phoenician. Lisbon finally emerged as a city during the 12th century.
Lisbon's hotels get packed during summertime because of the numerous festivals, colorful parades and street parties held during that time. Some of the most popular events during summer include the Festival of the Sea, the BaixAnima Street Festival and the Lisbon Village Festival. The most-visited neighborhood in Lisbon is Belem where one can find many historical sites including the spectacular Belem Tower, Jeronimos Monastery, Monuments to the Discoveries and Afonso de Albuquerque, Belem Cultural Centre and the Coach Museum. Other popular attractions include Cristo Rei, St. George's Castle, Basilica da Estrela, Vasco de Gama Tower, Lisbon Zoo, Oceanarium and Botanical Garden.
The best options for tourists who want to enjoy the sights while exploring Lisbon are the Tram 28 and double-deck buses. If you are planning to explore one area, it is best to go around by foot or bicycle. Metros and buses are also accessible in the city.
