A visit to Egypt today is a visit to a living museum. In fact, it is one of the largest outdoor museums in the world. The towering influence and wealth of Ancient Egypt is most conspicuously expressed in the abundance of great monuments. The Pyramids, mountainous tombs built to ensure immortality, have certainly fulfilled their purpose, and the tombs and treasures of the Pharaohs captivate visitors with their grace and beauty.
The modern is infused with the ageless. The celebration of life at its most mundane and profound reverence for the transcendent powers that sustain life are expressed side by side. At every turn, we are reminded of the humanity of a people who lived at the dawn of history. It is moving to realize the continuity of life though time.
This sense of continuity is most evident along the banks of the Nile where daily life has changed little in thousands of years. An ancient Greek visitor to Egypt wrote, Egypt is the gift of the Nile. The Nile quite literally brought life to a parched land and nourished a mighty culture. Today the Nile is an eternal vestige of the distant past. The timeless way of life along its banks and the riches bestowed on those who respect it are evidence of its power. Flowing from the past through the present and beyond, the river Nile carries in its wake the essence of the land and its people.
As a tourist destination, modern Egypt offers comfort and safety. The new tourist attractions along the Red Sea, as well as a first-class infrastructure throughout the country, makes Egypt one of the top destinations in the world as we enter the third millennium.
