Vancouver looks like a sparkling jewel in a sea of blue as we leave the city centre. Our plan is to drive the 125 kilometres to the ski resort of Whistler along the Sea to Sky Highway. We have all day to enjoy the drive and stop at various attractions dublin car rental so we start out slowly. Our first stop is after six minutes.
The 125 year-old park, bordering Vancouver's downtown to the west, is impressive for its beauty, its size (400 hectares), its beaches, its seawall and its attractions.  It has a large lagoon – called Lost Lagoon with a spectacular water fountain, and a lake called Beaver Lake. It has outstanding beaches, grand forest with hundreds of trails, open grassy dublin car rental areas for concerts, theatre events, movie screenings, sports and vistas from lookouts like Brockton Point.
We debate about taking a horse-drawn carriage ride then settle for a self-drive. Highlights for us are Prospect Point, which offers excellent dublin car rental views of the Lions Gate Bridge and Burrard Inlet, Brockton Point Lighthouse built in 1914, the nine totem poles and the Rhododendron Garden. We wander around, drive the circular dublin car rental path around the park and are surprised when we realise we have been here for one and a half hours.
We leave the park and cross the bridge to North Vancouver. A bridge has been talked about on this site since around 1890 but it was not until the Guinness family (of Irish beer fame) bought the land on the north shore of Burrard Inlet that it became a reality. It opened to traffic in 1938 with a toll of 25 cents for each car. In 1955, the Guinness dublin car rental family sold the bridge to the Province of British Columbia and in 1963, the tolls were dropped.
In 1975, the north viaduct was replaced with a wider steel deck and the main bridge deck was replaced in 2000-2001. Today, as we cross, there are three lanes with the center one reversible depending on traffic demand. The Lions Gate Bridge has become a landmark and is often used in television broadcasts and movies as a symbol of Vancouver.
As we clear the bridge and enter North Vancouver, the traffic eases and we follow the signs to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. There has been a suspension bridge here since 1889 and the present challenging bridge dublin car rental stretches 137m across and 70m above the Capilano River. The bridge is what has made the park famous but there are several other excellent attractions. Some are in the 'adventure' category, but there is also the opportunity to see, touch and learn about the wonder of the temperate rainforest with its thousand-year old trees.
The 27-acre, privately-owned park provides tranquillity, adventure, thrills and an unforgettable experience all at the same time. Cliffwalk is the park's newest attraction, but for me it is easier to handle than the bridge. My wife and I walk the cantilevered walkway clinging to the granite cliff high above Capilano Canyon. She feels exhilaration while I discover fear, but we both have a sense of achievement after we finish. dublin car rental We have two hours of fun and could stay much longer.
Horseshoe Bay is a waterfront village with galleries, a marina, shops, dublin car rental restaurants, pubs and a restful park at the water s edge. This is the site of a major ferry terminal for passengers heading to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast that can only be reached by boat or seaplane, and Bowen Island.
dublin car rental North from here the road follows Howes Sound. There are nice water views to the left and mountain views to the right. The BC Mining Museum dublin car rental is worthy of a stop. This was once a huge copper mine and it's been through an impressive restoration. We enjoy the underground train tour into the pitch-black mine tunnels and there is a large gift store.
The 335m falls is the third highest in British Columbia and there is a car park just off the highway. A short paved path leads to the base of the falls where there is an impressive view of the tumbling waters.
An outlet provides food snacks, park and outdoor recreation information dublin car rental and souvenirs and there are picnicking, hiking and toilet facilities. From the Falls, a popular but quite steep 8km round-trip dublin car rental hike leads up and over to the top of the Stawamus Chief, yielding breathtaking views of Squamish, Howe Sound and surrounding peaks.
The Stawamus Chief, which is claimed to be the second largest granite monolith in the world, is a world-class climbing destination, but we have no time for that and we reluctantly almost ignore the town of Squamish; a town that claims to have the second highest number of residents who are artists by profession in all of Canada.
We do make one visit in Squamish and that is to the West Coast Railway Heritage. We tour interesting dublin car rental authentic railway equipment but for us the highlight is the magnificent Royal Hudson steam locomotive restored to its full beauty.
We climb aboard snowplows, cabooses locomotives dublin car rental and learn how Canada s mail was processed on rails. The park has 90 pieces of heritage railway rolling stock plus a significant collection of railway related artefacts. The oldest pieces are the business car British Columbia dublin car rental (1890) and a rare Canadian Pacific Colonist dublin car rental sleeping car (1905).
dublin car rental The drive from Squamish to Whistler is a delight. On reaching the village we are not disappointed either. The pedestrian village has won numerous design awards and Whistler has been regularly voted among the top destinations dublin car rental in North America by major ski magazines.
The sinking sun is huge above the darkening mountain peaks as we find some accommodation and walk down the vibrant Village Stroll. It is a perfect place for people watching, shopping, dining or just kicking back. We grab a drink on a terrace and take stock of the situation. From where we sit there is snow on the peaks, and although dublin car rental it is past skiing time, the Whistler Village Gondola is still working. We learn we can ride this to the top of Whistler Mountain then take the amazing Peak to Peak journey between the top of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. That is a 'must' for tomorrow…
The 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games events were held in Vancouver, Richmond, at Cypress Mountain and Whistler. Whistler hosted Olympic and Paralympic Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing dublin car rental and various other events. Olympic and Paralympic Villages and media facilities were located in both Vancouver and Whistler.
Whistler dublin car rental Olympic Plaza is a legacy of those games. It is now a permanent venue for recreation and arts and crafts. It features a lawn, playground, outdoor performance spaces, and public art. Some of the most popular events are free outdoor concerts and performances where you can bring your picnic blankets and get ready to enjoy long summer nights full of live music under the stars.
