Thanks for the responses. If I do go by who is near me than it does seem that philly car share is the winner, but in talking to people about this, no one has any positive things to say about them. As to zipcar, the only opinion I have heard on the matter is Mr. Goodman's. Maybe Enterprise buying them will make them better. I plan to sign up for one soon, so any more insights would be appreciated.
As to my needs, I would use a car 2 - 4 times a months, and mostly to to go to see people in the suburbs for a few hours. If I did have one I would probably also use it to do an occasional big trip to Whole Foods. I have been putting this off for awhile but I have a very sick old cat which has meant borrowing people's cars to go to the Vet, so it has made this decision a bit more pressing over the near term.

fwiw i occasionally use one hour rentals. two hours would be an inconvenience. it doesnt staples center los angeles ca take two hours to run am errand. fwiw zipcars prices also went up. the biggest problem is that the states car rental charge is a flat fee.

Zipcar? I filled out the application, paid the fee, and was driving in about 20 minutes. Insurance is only $8/mo and is zero deductible. It's just easy. They also completed the transition to Avis and they're still the same.

Crap, I wish I had read this one post before signing up for Zip Car, because I do take long drives up to Maine. Well, in the end I went with Zip Car because I liked their cars more. Prices seemed comparable and I was turned off by the mostly negative things being said about PCS, even if that seems to have been in the past.
